Yusuke Godai and Kaoru Ichijou are the protagonists of Kamen Rider Kuuga. The ship is known as 51 in the Japanese fandom and known by the same name in some parts of English-speaking fandom. The ship name comes from the Japanese spelling of their names, 五(5)代 and 一(1)条.
Relationship in Canon
Godai and Ichijou meet in the first episode of Kuuga, Ichijou working on the investigation into the explosion at the ruins and Godai being a friend of a philologist who'd been working with the excavation team. While Godai initially gets in trouble for trying to sneak past police lines to investigate the site, the pair quickly form a strong bond and start working together. Godai fights the grongi and Ichijou provides him with police resources while keeping his identity secret as long as possible.
The series and novel contain numerous ship tease moments, and in Kamen Rider Decade, an alternate version of Kuuga has a genderbent version of Ichijou who explicitly has some form of romantic relationship with the alternate form of Godai, Yusuke Onodera.
Depiction in Fanworks
The pair's relationship in fanworks tends to play very close to canon, with the main interest of fans being reunion fanfiction, set after the show's finale, and missing scene fanfiction. There is also a lot of non-reunion, post canon based fiction, typically in the vein of character studies of Ichijou's life going on after Godai disappears.
