Yule Ball is a formal ball in the Harry Potter books. It is held at the host school—either Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, or Durmstrang—during a year when the Triwizard Tournament is hosted.

Many fanworks set during Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire feature or focus on the Yule Ball, as it is the ideal venue for exploring character relationships, particularly those between characters from different wizarding schools. Characters might pursue a romantic relationship by asking the object of their affection to the ball, or else meet and dance with them while at the ball.

Yule Balls are also a fannish event in which fans, often at an academic institution, will stage a Harry Potter-style Yule Ball. Attendees typically wear dress robes, Hogwarts robes or other formalwear and take part in Harry Potter-themed activities, which can range from Sortings to Triwizard Tournament "competitions" to performances from Wizard Rock bands. They are typically organised by student-run Harry Potter or Quidditch societies.[1][2]

  • The Best Dance by Blossomwitch. Sometimes you show up to the ball with the wrong date; sometimes you don't realize who you're happiest with until everyone else is gone and you find yourself alone for a moment thinking, this is it. At the Yule Ball, Hermione and Ginny experience such a moment. Implied femslash.
