Reactions and Reviews

This book contains biographies on Humbert Allen Astredo. Barbara Cason. John Karlen, Jerry Lacy, Olana Millay, Larll Parker, Oenni Patrick. Lisa Richards. Kathryn Leigh Scott and Michael Stroka. The sections were written by either Barbara F1ster-liltz or Robert Finocchio. Several of these sections originally appeared in issues of "The World of Dark Shadows". others were written specially for this vohane. Each is accompanied by one of Barb's incompar!ble illustrations--all full page. (My personal favorite-·Jerry Lacy standing. Bogart-like. in hat and trenchcoat near a mysteriously flickering streetlamp. ) The biographies are all informative and highly entertaining as we are treated into glimpses of the personal lives of the people who brought so many memorable characters to life. For example. did you know that Kathryn L.eigh Scott once went on a trek to the North Pole? That Diana Millay writes poetry? That Lisa Richards has co-starred (outside of DS!) with people like Jerry Lacy. Donna McKechnie, Chrisopher Pennock and Christopher Bernau? To learn more, order a copy--I know you'll be pleased! format, handsomely bound with a clear. protective plastic cover. Cost $5.00. [1]

WITHOUT MAKEUP was published In 1980 to coincide with Shadowcon IV and to give the attendees who bought the book a chance to know a little more about the lives and the careers of the guests for that year's convention. For instance, how many of you knew that Humbert Allen Astredo had an Uncle Jack that rode with Pancho Villa? Or that Jerry Lacy saw action in Korea as a jeep driver and radio operator ((Except those who might be'ong to Jerry's fan club, run by that most loveable lady, Gloria Lillibridge))? Or that Lara Parker is a descendant of confederate General James Longstreet, whom many historians credit for helping the South loose the Civil War.' Those and many other interesting facts are contained in this book. Some of the biographies are long, such as the ones on Astredo and Karlen. Others are comparatively short, such as the ones on Barbara Cason and Lisa Richards. Not that these people don't have the interesting lives we know they do, but a pressing deadline for going to press (no pun there) prohibited Barbara and Robert from getting more on these fascinating people. I have mentioned some of the actor's names above, but here is a complete list of who's who in this book: Humbert Allen Astredo, Barbara Cason, John Karlen, Jerry Lacy, Diana Hillay, Lara Parker, Dennis Patrick, Lisa Richards, Kathryn Leigh Scott and Michael Stroka. Some of the biographies originally appeared in The World of Dark Shadows, between 1977 and 1930. Before each biography, Barbara Fister-Liltz has done a portrait of each actor in what might be considered their most famous role. Lara Parker is portrayed as The Enchantress, Humbert Allen Astredo as The Magician, Michael Stroka as The Renaissance Man ((not that Arlstede or Bruno Hess were Renaissance Men, but Michael is, speaking at least eight languages, among many other talents)), Jerry Lacy as Bogart, and so on. The only complaint I have about this book is that it doesn't have a table of contents. If you want to find somebody's biography, you have to thumb through the book until you come upon it. Other than that, I have no complaints. For those of you who aren't up to date on some of the Dark Shadows actors and what they've been doing, this is the book. For those who want to know more on the personal lives of some of your OS favorites, this is the book. Admittedly, it doesn't cover everyone, but I think it can be said safely assumed that this won't be the last volume of WITHOUT MAKEUP. Robert and Barbara have done a fine job with this Somehow, we'll have to convince them to return to the writing desks and drawing boards and issue another volume of biographies of those actors we loved so much on Dark Shadows.[2]
