Reactions and Reviews

There are some authors I don't read very often cos they label themselves "gen", and while they might think that they are, sometimes such authors are writing Pros exactly the way I see the show, just not getting around to the actual sex bit. While I like the sex bits perfectly well (*g*) it's our lads' relationship that I like best of all, and I don't need to see the sex every time in order to know that it's a part of what's there... It works the other way around, too - I don't like fic that's just an excuse for writing sex, and doesn't show me anything about an actual B/D relationship. So... So this lunchtime I read a couple of stories, and Gill Hale's While the Dust Settles, which is a quick wee read, was the first! It's the lads post-Stirring of Dust, when they've been bollocked all through by Cowley, where Doyle's been bashed and tied, and where Bodie deals with all that in the way Bodie does - by going home with Doyle. See the slash already? *g* [1]

Mmm, yes, good choice! I tend to avoid gen (perhaps I sort-of expect that in a slash-friendly fandom, gen is going to be all about how they're not, couldn't possibly be in a relationship - not that it has to be that way, of course, but I suppose I have a smidgin of doubt), but this is a good example of how good it can be - the relationship is all there! Especially in the fact that Bodie doesn't even go home to his own comfortable bed after Doyle's asleep; he needs to be there on his own account as much as on Ray's. Very nice story, thanks for reccing it! [2]

Yes, I avoid gen too, and as you say it's usually because I'm assuming that the writer is bending over backwards to label the story not slash... But slash doesn't equal sex scene for me, it's really the whole relationship, and the build up and tides and flows of that relationship, and that's what I want to read about... The sex is often fun, but when I think about fics that work for me and those that don't, if the sex shows nothing about their relationship at all, then I'd rather it wasn't there... Luckily I reckon most Pros writers get it right... *g* And yeay, I'm so glad you liked this one! I've just recced another Gil Hale that you might appreciate too... and I wish I'd printed out more, now, all ready for tonight! [3]

...just wanted to say how lovely to see Gil Hale's fic recced!

I love her writing. She writes the lads as I can see them in the episodes, true to character and with so much feeling. "A Pugnacious Angel" made me pick up a pencil after a decade of neglecting the hobby.

"Sorry, Bodie" and "Where I Can Cross Over" are two more favorites. [4]
