Voices of Valdemar was the first fiction, art, and poetry zine approved by Mercedes Lackey.

It, however, never got off the ground, making Arrow's Message the first Valdemar, Lackey-approved zine to be published.

The birth:

Sound of trumpets! Super news! Misty fan Richard Corbin plans to start a Misty fanzine after he finishes with Fall*Con, scheduled for February 17-19, 1989, at which Misty is the guest of honor, and of which he is President. Richard is a regular contributor to the Anne McCaffrey fan group Ista Weyr's quarterly fanzine Weyr Words and has Misty's blessing for this.

Richard has asked us to tell the writers and artists among you to drop him a line now to let him know of your interest. He will write back with information on how and when to submit stories and artwork. For instance, writers should only send copies, as returning material is time consuming and costly, but artists must send original work. [1]

The death:

RE RICHARD CORBIN FIASCO AND THE IT-NEVER-CAME-TO-PASS FANZINE "VOICES OF VALDEMAR": Richard wrote to both Judith and myself with lots of ideas and great plans for a Mercedes Lackey fanzine called "Voices of Valdemar". He even had Misty's okay. We told you all to send material to him . . . And he's never contacted us, or any of those who sent him their efforts, since. (The last letter I received was in January 1989.) Sorry, children. [2]

One harshly-stated repercussion: The editors of Queen's Own encouraged fans to submit material to a proposed Valdemar zine, and cited "Voices of Valdemar" as a failure to be ignored:

"TALES OF VALDEMAR AND BEYOND, Nathan Waldbauer writes, will have a September 1st deadline for November publication.... ONCE BURNED, TWICE SHY? Don't be! If you were one of those who sent material to the-one-whose-name-will-not-be-mentioned [reference to "Voices of Valdemar"] and were disappointed, and have therefore hesitated to even request guidelines from Nathan or Stephanie for fear of being disappointed again, I want to urge and encourage you to lift up your chins, throw back your shoulders, and get out those stamps and envelopes! As Judith says, "There is no failure, only feedback."" [3]
