The Sound of Silence is a Kirk/Spock story by Anne Elliot.

It was published in the print zine First Time #59.

Summary

"When Spock is temporarily made deaf and almost unable to speak by an infection, Kirk decides itʼs the best time to say what heʼs longed to say to Spock without fear of the Vulcan actually being able to hear him."

Reactions and Reviews

Cackling! Chortling! Gurgling! Giggling! In short, laughing out loud. That’s the reaction this story produced in me as I read it one night during Shore Leave. (Although I rarely indulge in the temptation to read zines when I could be visiting with friends instead, sometimes I am weak.) I sat in bed and my three roommates were constantly asking: What’s so funny? Or saying: Oh, come on, it can’t be that funny!

Trust me, it is. Anne definitely has a gift. She recently wrote a much more serious story for Beyond Dreams Press that we were very pleased to print, so she has gifts for both serious and humorous story-writing, which is amazing. Sound of Silence is a hoot from beginning to end. Well, okay, I don’t exactly buy the central premise, which has Kirk behaving in a way that I’m not convinced he would, but who the heck cares? That’s not what this story is about. You give humorous stories like this a lot of leeway, and you give people who can write them a lot of respect and occasional bribes, asking them to please, please, write another one?

So, Anne, what’s it to be? Chanel No. Five? Godiva Chocolates? Jimmy Choo shoes? [1]
