The Pattern is an X-Files story by Joann Humby.

Synopsis: "For Mulder, catching Monty Props the first time was hard. The second time it nearly killed him. Third time lucky? A mix of pre-XF and XF days. A story of Monty Props, Bill Patterson, Diana Fowley and Walter Skinner. And of course Mulder and Scully. A tale of two love affairs, two bosses and a series of murders."

Reactions and Reviews

It’s not every day we stumble across a casefile that has us sitting on the edges of our seats. Not for 343K anyway. But this one, hooooo boy. Joann Humby is a favorite of ours, and for good reason. Her writing style is clean and concise, but razor-sharp and beautiful. Her characterization and dialogue are just like our duo…sparse, but when they do speak the layers of what they’re saying with their mouths and not saying with their body language are clearly evident.

Here, we have a dual casefile, which is a really wonderful storytelling technique. Mulder the Wunderkind profiler, laboring under Bill Patterson, is working hard to catch Monty Props for the first time in 1988. Meanwhile, Mulder the outcast and his partner-but-maybe-more-partner, are working to catch a copycat serial killer in 2000. Bonus: We get to see how Mulder met Diana, and at the same time, how Mulder and Scully finally crossed that last threshold, all while working through a case where the killers shared the same MO.

The concurrent storylines make for double the drama, double the angst, and double the pleasure. We think you’re going to love this, and we’ll be a monkey’s uncle if it doesn’t move itself to the top of your top ten or twenty fics you’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.[1]
