Reactions and Reviews

This strange story takes place in the Vulcan Empire. Anna Parrish is very good at depicting Kirk's claustrophobic fear of bonding, so good, indeed, that my main problem with the story is believing his feelings could ever be overcome. To be forced into a marriage seems so terrible that loving your partner is even an additional horror. I had a few moments of confusion because I assumed Starfleet Academy was on Vulcan and then it turned out to be on Earth. Aside from that, and the suffocation of virtual enslavement and mental near-rape, I enjoyed the story. One good bit is where Amanda tells Spock to be gentle with Kirk: "Of course. Was there ever any doubt?" His mother's answer disturbed him. "Yes." Good stuff. But force—and, though Spock was gentle by his lights, it was really coercion—gives me the chills. [1]

"The New Bond Mate,"by Anna Parrish, Charisma #7. An alternate universe story in which Spock is captain and Kirk is a cadet. For me fascinating (sorry, but I love this word) was the fact that Kirk wasn't afraid of the sex, but he was afraid of the bond. Though I can understand him. An empire in which the Vulcans rule and in which one being a human has to be connected with a Vulcan family to get in the academy, fills the humans not exactly with trust in view of the mysterious powers (mind-meld/bond) of the Vulcans. And Kirk is, after all, only a human. I liked this story very much and I loved Spock's rather unorthodox (I only hope this word has the same meaning in English which it has in German) way to let his bond mate forget fora moment his fear.
