Reactions and Reviews

A beautiful story which provides some much needed closure for this character and her feelings toward her daughter. The descriptions do a wonderful job of setting the tone, and I could really hear Miral Torres's voice. [1]

An interesting exploration of the character of B'Elanna's mother, with a very effective ending. I quite enjoyed it. [2]

What a beautiful story! Finally, here is Miral's side of the story and I love the picture Annie paints here, of a mother who desperately loves her child but didn't know how to reconcile those feelings with her culture. Lovely story. I hope to see more stories from Annie this year. [3]

I thought this first-person narrative told by B'Elanna's mother was very well-done. The author conjures Miral up vividly, her thoughts, feelings, and even the physical weariness she feels. She also is good at evoking John Torres, or at least the John Torres that Miral sees. She makes us see what the initial attraction must have been for this mismatched couple. And finally, she makes you feel for what the young B'Elanna must have gone through as the daughter of these parents, and Miral's uneasy relationship with her. And Miral's regrets and pride. I liked how it ended with her prayer and overhearing the prayer of others. "The Final Candles" is a moving and evocative story. [4]

Annie has always had a terrific way with P/T. This story about Miral--B'Elanna's mother, not her daughter--is lovely, and makes me annoyed, all over again, that the producers decided to kill her off so that B'Elanna would never have the chance to reconcile with her in life. At least we have her in fanfic, and Annie does a wonderful job with her here. [5]
