The Captain's Needs is a K/S story by Quilla S. Pongee.

Deeb for "The Captain's Needs" -- "Oh, my lucky stars! Here I am once again attempting to verbalize how much excitement and enjoyment I derive from a piece of art (I'm not sure if I mean the whole picture or the most tantalizing penis I believe I've ever seen!) Both are exquisite! Spock has a very youthful looking face, but who can linger there long enough to truly appreciate the face? What a prize-winning piece of equipment! Long and sturdy and perfedly formed—Thank you, thank you, DEEB. It's a wonder Kirk ever makes it to the bridge!" [1] Another fan writes: "Well, if the picture on page 62 was for Kirkophiles, this picture will cause all the Spockophiles to swoon dead away! Whoa, my goodness me. Yummy, yummy, yummy! My K/S friends know that I find Kirk to be more attractive, but if Leonard Nimoy looked like this then I might have to consider changing my opinion! (Well, maybe I would let him tie with Kirk in my affections.) This is a nude of Spock on his knees. A supremely well endowed Spock, I might add! What I like about this picture is that it is an idealized representation of Spock that I find believable. I just don’t buy the pictures of Spock I sometimes see where he is rippling with muscles. Leonard Nimoy has that long, lean physique that I don’t think can ever look like a body builder. I have a friend with a build like Nimoy’s (tall and slender) and he went to the gym for six months once with a man who had a build more like Shatner’s (shorter and more compact.) My friend was quite chagrined when after both diligently worked out for six months, his friend had muscles everywhere while he hardly looked any different. This picture of Spock is more muscular than Nimoy was in the series, but in a believable fashion. The shoulders are a bit broader, so the waist is a little more defined, and the arms are also a little more muscular. For the long, lean body type, this picture is just about perfect. (In my opinion, of course. I know lots of fans love a rippling with muscles Spock, but it’s just not to my tastes.)" [2]

It was published in the print zine First Time #38.

Summary

From the publisher: "On the anniversary of Gary Mitchellʼs death, McCoy asks Spock to stay with the Captain."

Excerpt

"Anyway...I wanted to talk to you about...." McCoy noticed himself beginning to fidget under the Vulcan's intense stare. "The captain." Spock didn't have to hazard a guess. Jim Kirk was the primary focus of their lives. "The the 'anniversary.'"

Reactions and Reviews

McCoy is going to the "Base Med. Center" for 2 days and asks Spock to be with the captain during that time as it's evidently the anniversary of Gary Mitchell's death and Kirk is still mourning.

Very nice touch in beginning showing McCoy's quarters having an "interactive mural covering one entire wall".

A little iffy to have McCoy say: "'twas" and "you dolt" and not to respond to Spock saying:"Good-bye. Leonard." And good luck in your efforts." How many times does Spock call him by his first name and how often does he wish him luck? I did like that Spock drank and appreciated the brandy, but it was unexplained.

K and S engage in a lengthy conversation that was. for the most part, wildly out of character for both of them as they declare their feelings, sexual and otherwise, for each other. However. I still enjoyed it as it's nice, direct reading and did create some good sexual tension. Although, in addition. I found it a little strange that they spoke so openly and then just said goodnight.

I'm not at all certain what the point or purpose was of the pizza eating scene with McCoy.

It's very hard to imagine Kirk asking Spock if he should bring his toothbrush.

"Moments later, the outer door opened, the cabin pressure barely altering, but still discernible to someone accustomed to living on a starship," Is there a change in pressure when doors open and close? "... removing the slip-proof soft shoes that nearly everyone on board wore." What are those? Don't they have carpet?

While they are in bed together, they engage in a lengthy conversation about what they want to do. Perhaps it might have been more effective if they were to have done it and thought about those things instead. But they continue to talk, even when they can't wait any longer. Help! "a handful of spunk". Spunk?

Cute line: "Humans enjoyed kissing immensely. half-humans enjoyed it just as much."

And equally cute as Spock tries his hand at joke telling with the Spockian version of "Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?".

And a neat drawing of Spock by Deeb accompanying the story. There are two things I like about that drawing. One is the expression on Spock's face.

Nice, gentle banter at the end. [3]

A lovely, charming story. Clear and clean writing for the most part. Dialogue rings true; characters feel authentic. I like the way this Spock talks. I am charmed by both of them.

I don't think the planet scene (McCoy and Kirk having lunch) adds anything at all; it felt irrelevant, even though it gave McCoy a part in pushing them toward each other a little,

t also think having them get tipsy on alcohol as a spur to get them to reveal themselves, is something like using a convenience or a crutch. But maybe that's the reaction of the sober-alcoholic in me. I can't get drunk with them!

Kirk and Spock get together for the evening, drinking brancjy. Kirk is mourning having had to kill Gary Mitchell. This is quite an interesting conversation, Spock speculating that if Gary had lived he might have been an intimate companion to Kirk. Kirk is surprised Spock would think about it in that way. Kirk had only been with Gary once in an orgy; technically they never had sex together. Spock admits that had Gary, the first officer, been his captain's sexual partner, it would have been a "logical arrangement." Kirk is aware that this is a very revealing statement by Spock.

Spock is secretly relieved Kirk and Gary had not been lovers, A very beautiful intimate conversation, because "time is fleeting" and it is best to go ahead and reveal themselves. This feels very believable, that they would finally come to that moment of realization and would cease putting off expressing themselves.

When Kirk reveals his feelings for Spock...oh! A heart-moving scene. When they had first met. Kirk wanted Spock sexually very much. but he quelled those feelings and of course grew to value the friendship so highly. Spock is shocked. And they're both getting loose from drinking. Beautiful moments. Little things that slip out that further the intimacy of their talk. So sweet. And Spock is more comfortable than Kirk with suggesting they act on the intensity of their feelings. Nice! Delicious tension; I found myself holding my breath. I love that they made a date for dinner and...later.

Although in a few places a little obvious or simplistic, or perhaps over-explained, I love this long, slow courting.

So, there I was, all strung out, and then: Too much talk during sex! All those really words could better have been in thoughts or in narrative surrounding their actions, ngj in their dialogue-it spoiled their lovemaking. Too much rational talk-not the breathless kind of non-linear talk which is more likely-deflated the passion, even though gorgeous expressions of feelings.

But, yes, so warm and sweet anyway.... [4]

Ordinarily this is a story I would just pass by. Long conversations followed by sex scenes are not really what I consider stories. However, this one had a great moment that none of the other reviewers mentioned. After Kirk and Spock have confessed their love for each other and are ready to leap into each other's arms. Kirk asks Spock to wait while he thinks things over. I too have asked for and been granted time to think things over on one or two occasions. I know what a powerful way this can be to start a relationship. It gives the relationship a solid base of mutual respect and a deliberateness that goes beyond the one night stand. I appreciated Ms. Pongee giving Kirk and Spock that kind of start. [5]

It's very rare to find that both Kirk and Spock are equally sophisticated about sex. I appreciate seeing that in a K/S story. I've never been a great fan of virginity or awkwardness. The dialogue, the breezy narration and the general atmosphere were all refreshing. Most K/S is intense enough to cause an emotional overload, so it's good to take a rest from all that. [6]

From the start, this story felt good, in spite of the set up being Kirk's annual melancholy over Gary Mitchell's death. Requiring Tittle prompting, Spock is assigned by McCoy to keep his captain company on this grim anniversary.

I found the conversations between the two men very straightforward and appropriate. As their discussion about Gary progresses, Spock reveals more and more of himself and his appreciation of James T. Kirk. The evening ends with some subtle and inspiring promises. Always gratified when there's lots of verbal sharing and foreplay, I was delighted with the way this story progressed.Vulcans can tease as well as humans! And be just as sure of themselves! I like this approach.

As Spock observes, they enjoy a lengthy arousal— butthat's only the beginning. Very nice encounter! [7]
