The Batman is a 2022 film centered around the DC Comics character Batman in his early years operating as a vigilante. The film is a reboot of the character and is not a part of the recent DC Extended Universe. The film is notable in that it focuses more on the Batman persona than the Bruce Wayne persona, and delves into the common comics depiction of Batman as a great detective.

This film is intended to launch a Batman shared universe, with two sequels planned and two spin-off television series in development for HBO Max, show featuring Colin Farrell's Penguin. And because the Paul Dano's performance as The Riddler, DC Comics tapped the actor to write a six-issue bimonthly series based on his version of the character called, "Riddler: Year One", for their DC Black Label.

When news of the casting was announced, with the casting of Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz to play Batman and Catwoman, there was quite a buzz on social media, mainly on Twitter about whether or not it was a good choice of actors for the respective roles. Numerous articles, posts and tweets for and against casting both of them in the roles were produced by fans and critics. Some of the anti-casting publications migrated to hate speeches and racism due to Kravitz's ethnicity, others against Pattinson tried to bring up his old work, as a way of undermining the ability of both to act in the film. While fans in favor brought the incredible resemblance between the actors to the characters in the comics,[note 1] even using the arguments of those against the casting as a way to show how Pattinson and Kravitz were the right choice.[citation needed] Little to no fanfare seems to have occurred after the casting of Paul Dano as The Riddler, or Colin Farrell as Penguin was announced.

Memes and satires about Pattinson playing Edward Cullen in Twilight a glowing vampire, and now would play Batman an emo/goth bat have sprinkled the internet. The Riddler's use of a more sober costume, in addition to his adorable devotion and fangirling for Batman, led to countless posts of the same type. With comparisons of other personifications of the character in television and film, and slash pairings between characters.

With works published in AO3 since the beginning of 2020[1] the tag Batman (Movie 2022) already has 2354 works until June 2022.

Notes

  1. ^ IMDb Trivia: Robert Pattinson's Batman suit is similar looking to the Batman suit in the 2018 DC Black Label three-issue comic series, "Batman: Damned". In particular, the armor, somewhat baggy pants, and boots are strikingly similar.
