Thai BL is a term for Thai dramas of the boys' love genre. Similarly, Thai GL is the term for Thai dramas of the girls' love genre.
It gained fannish-attention from English-speaking fandom in late 2021, starting with the release of Bad Buddy, and later, KinnPorsche: the Series, both of which spawned sizable international fandoms. This also attracted a significant amount of new international viewers who had not watched Thai BLs before, leading to subsequent relative popularity with other Thai BL among more English-speaking fans.
A noticeable portion of the popularity especially went to shows produced by GMMTV, since actors were marketed as "couples" and would sometimes star in multiple BL dramas together as the main pairing.
Thai BL is also referred to as "Y-series" in Thai, with the Y coming from the Japanese term "yaoi."
