Tarnished Gold is a popular fanfiction in the Scum Villain's Self-Saving System fandom. It is a notable example of an AU in which Shen Yuan, the protagonist of Scum Villain, transmigrates into a character other than Shen Jiu (the original Shen Qingqiu). In this fic, he transmigrates into Gongyi Xiao, a side character destined to be outshined and replaced by Luo Binghe, rather than be the object of his quest for vengeance.
Summary
Becoming emperor of the cultivation world will start with a first step as small and basic as becoming Head Disciple of Huan Hua Palace. For that, he must steal the position away from the current Head Disciple. Luo Binghe will sabotage, upstage, and completely and utterly best him.The road to destroying everything and everyone who has ever wronged him, to becoming the highest ruler so that no one will ever have the right to control him ever again - it will start as simply as ruining Gongyi Xiao’s life.
Compared to everything else he’s already done, this should be easy.

a SVSSS AU where SY transmigrated into GYX instead, but told solely from the outsider POV of LBH. It follows him as he works to replace GYX as head disciple, but gets gradually more and more frustrated and intrigued by this enigmatic man who seems to see himself as an actor with an expiring role. Incredible character study, and so many moments where you can feel the palpable angst coming through that LBH has no frame of reference for. Great use of meta-narrative.[1]
Gonna go for a long fic and give this to Tarnished Gold by Prim_the_Amazing, which I’ve read through twice and reread pieces of more often than that. The premise is essentially ‘what if Shen Yuan transmigrated into Gongyi Xiao’ and makes a mostly-blackened fresh-out-of-the-Abyss Bing-ge the PoV character. No one is having a good time for most of this fic, but it’s fantastic. Also turns the Little Palace Mistress into a fully fleshed out character in her own right and I love her? Just all around solid and plotty and ouchy and GOOD.[2]
this one is beautifully written and it's all in Bingge's POV! (!!!!) It focuses of his manipulations and plans to take over the palace and how much SY!GYX deeply confuses him. It's probably my favorite at the moment, especially since we don't have access to SY's inner monologue, only Binghe's.[3]
