Talk:Fan Service

Is there a term for the opposite of Fan Service? Like when TPTB intentionally back off or remove things that makes fans happy? I'm thinking of The Sentinel's later seasons when the writers toned down the slashier elements as they thought they weren't attracting enough 18-35 year old guys. EDITED for typos. --Mrs. Potato Head 13:06, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

I don't know of one, though maybe there should be. I think that sort of thing is generally put down to homophobia &/or misogyny: we only want the straight boys watching our beautiful show. --MegR 14:32, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Canon Examples

What about Nathan Fillion's character in Castle dressing up in the costume of Malcolm Reynolds (his character in Firefly) on Halloween? Fitting example? anotherslashfan 13:37, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Anime examples

Should there be some examples from anime/manga, given that's where the term derived from? (although I don't think I notice that sort of thing enough to come up with any). Or is it being used in a whole different way here or something? --MegR 14:32, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Is there an opposite?

Is there a term or a place on the wiki for when TPTB does an anti-fan service (such as toning down the domestic scenes in the third season in The Sentinel -- Jim in apron and the flirty comments, or eliminating the "weekly lunch" between Bashir and Garak in DS9, because these things were deemed "too gay" and/or because fans ran with it in ways the folks in charge of drumming up popularity with the right demographics didn't intend), or TPTB doing/adding something on screen more overt, an action or symbol that basically gives fans the out-and-out finger, no translation needed? --Mrs. Potato Head 12:48, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Gay Panic? http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GayPanic --Doro 21:18, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Gay Panic is good for TS and DS9 examples. Is that the term we should use here on Fanlore? I don't know SPN fandom well, but hasn't there been some jabs at fans in that show? Were/are they gay panic jabs or something else? --Mrs. Potato Head 21:26, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

first sentence weirds me out

Fan Service is a term that media fandom has inherited/stolen from anime/manga fandom. The construction implies that this is about fan service just in media fandom. I'm pretty sure I've heard the term used in other contexts.--æþel 02:49, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Okay, I fixed it myself, though it could use a second opinion.--æþel 03:01, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Non-sexual example?

The first and third examples in the non-sexual section seem to be clear, but the second example, from the moe board, is just lacking commas I think? I think the poster was saying "technobabble, fanservice, and dialogue". Because that's a pretty good summary of the first part of Mouretsu Pirates - it's very heavy on the sexual fanservice (and the technobabble and dialogue) and light on... most of everything else. If that makes sense? -the old briar pipe (talk) 00:21, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Ok, for lack of reply about this in 4 months, I'll remove that example, but I encourage folks to find clearer ones, especially for series that are not extremely well-known for sexual fanservice. There are plenty out there! -the old briar pipe (talk) 01:00, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
