I know there's at least two out there with Spock and housecats, but darned if I can find them.--Mrs. Potato Head 17:00, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

There is also a number with birds of prey, and at least one artist has an odd preference for snakes as porn pin-up props...--RatCreature 18:06, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
for a more recent, rather cute fanart with Spocks and cats: http://makowe-pola.livejournal.com/25678.html#cutid1 --RatCreature 18:17, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Cats, eh? I just added a link here from Sydney (Forever Knight). (And I can see that I will have to do a page on the Ger Bear Project.) Will you also be doing a page on Dogs? -- Greer Watson 18:36, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
are there many dog fanworks? I can think of a few stories where characters got turned into dogs, but for some reason as a prop they seem to be much less popular than cats? Though wolves are used for decoration again more often, and of course there's Dief. Maybe we ought to combine wolves into the dog page, like here big and small cats are lumped together....--RatCreature 18:40, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Do we want a general Animals in Fandom page? So far we've got cats, unicorns, Diefenbaker, Sydney, sehlats, ...? (How about penguins? I know SGA went through a penguin phase.) BTW, I love these animal pages!

Should this page be renamed to Cat? Cats is a musical.--æthel 18:58, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

The Cats musical is a good point. A general animals page would be good. Though shouldn't it be Animals in Fanworks rather than fandom?--RatCreature 20:00, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I'd go with Cats rather than Cat, but perhaps on a disambiguation page? Cat is also a woman's nickname, so there may be some of those. And I'd vote for Animals in Fanworks, but keep centaurs, unicorns, pegasus (pegasi?) and sehlats on different pages as, while animals, they're an alien/mystical thing. JMO.--Mrs. Potato Head 20:20, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Hm, yeah the singular feels a bit odd, despite the default singular policy, perhaps because it's not about any specific cat, and cat isn't a term to explain either, unlike Sehlat and even unicorn. (Technically I think Pegasus does not have a plural because there was only one and it's its name, the other would be just winged horses.) For me centaurs are more people than animals, just like mermen and such.--RatCreature 20:28, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I started an Animals in Fanworks page.--æthel 00:10, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Latest Edit

Hey, I had more than one example as a Cat as a romance starter to add(there's a Tony/Gibbs fic I know that has Tony's apartment burning down and Gibbs taking him in with a cat that pees everywhere and they bond over the cat, and so on). I find your edit a little prescriptive, actually. --Awils1 13:10, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

ETA: Ignore me, I missed the line where you added "cat as a romance starter". I'm okay with that. --Awils1 13:12, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Sorry about that -- I was trying to figure out a way to bump the not-great-looking fourth-level subheads up a level, and keep the Animal Transformation (with formerly/usually human characters) examples grouped at the end and the never-anything-but-feline character example fics at the top, but did so kind of clumsily. (And, oops, hadn't noticed you'd be adding more cat-as-romance starter examples -- maybe we can make that a separate subsection at the same subhead-level but above the "transformed" and "always a cat" (of which I know there's another I read in some fandom somewhere but I haven't been able to remember which one) subsections? --Sk 17:58, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
I recreated the section, but didn't put much thought into order. I guess we can see how it goes and what examples people add. Good call on the fourth-level subheadings--they're practically invisible.--æþel 20:53, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation

This looks like a good page to move as a disambiguation page, as there's also the Cats musical page, and a few other pages with Cats as the first word (though most of the other pages aren't just "Cats" by themselves). Though, if it were made into a disambiguation page the "Cats" page would need to be re-named. If it were, what would it be re-named to? Cats (animal), or Cats (trope) maybe? This is under the trope category, so I'd be more for Cats (trope). Any thoughts on disambiguation? Since there are really only two pages named "Cats" I wasn't totally sure. Patchlamb (talk) 19:50, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

There is a disambiguation for Cat which includes this page, the musical and one or two other 'cats'. Making a seperate disambiguation for the plural might help to declutter the original one.
If we agree to rename this page, I think 'Cat (trope)' (preference for singular terms over plural) would be good. SecurityBreach (talk) 09:07, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
We could re-name this to Cat (trope), or if we wanted it to be similar to the Animals in Fanworks page, it could be Cats in Fanworks (though could cats in fanworks potentially be misunderstood as "cats from the musical cats" in fanworks??). Then rather than a second disambig, re-directing "Cats" to the Cat disambig? Patchlamb (talk) 23:10, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Something that I want to add on about disambigging and the Animals in Fanworks page is that I have created the page Jinx (cat), so there may be a need to distinguish from cats with fandoms. Pinky G Rocket (talk) 23:31, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
I'd probably want to go with Cats (trope) in that case; "Cats in Fanworks" could potentially be confusing. There are more than one page with Jinx as the name now as well, so the Jinx page should probably be disambiguated. Patchlamb (talk) 19:16, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
