[art]: WARRIORS by T’Racionn: The artists that do photo manipulations are like magicians to me. In this illo that I would bet is the inspiration for CatalenaMara’s poem, Kirk and Spock are clad in beautiful medieval robes and sit astride horses. There is an otherworldly othertimely shine about them, and they positively glow with mystery. What is the mission they are on? And what is that spectral object Kirk is holding? This is a simply gorgeous piece of art and begs for a story to be written around it. Any takers? [1]

  • Blame the Wind by Elise Madrid (Kirk and Spock are summoned to Starbase Two for an unpleasant but necessary duty: a legal hearing to determine Janice Lester’s fate – a trip that will have far-reaching consequences for their lives: ""Because of what she’d done, even if she hadn’t managed to kill me I would have been locked away, condemned to live out my life as a prisoner. Not just in a cell, but locked away in a body that wasn’t mine. I would have been all alone, with no way out.” “No,” Spock responded adamantly. “Never alone. I knew who you were. I would never have allowed them to confine you.” “What could you have done?'” “I do not know, but I would have found a way to free you.”) (nominated for 2013 FanQ) (1)
  • Second Star to the Right by Jaylee (AU. While exploring an ancient mystery, Jim Kirk discovers far more than he ever hoped to find: '"Do you think there is life out there?” he'd asked back then, on the cusp of thirteen, his voice breaking as the onset of puberty reared its ugly head, and his eyes looking through the lens of his gift to land on her for the first time. 40 Eridani A. “I’m sure of it,” his grandfather had answered, looking up towards the sky. “The universe is a big place, what we see with our eyes only but an insignificant, tiny portion of it.” “Not so insignificant, Grandfather,” Jim muttered to his memories, leaning back in his chair, while his eyes remained trained on the one star. “We were apparently significant enough to be left a map…'”) (21)
  • Lover's Milk by Dale (31)
  • Traditions by Khiori (35)
  • Shame by Greywolf the Wanderer (This story has a WARNING – email for details. Faced with the reality of his own overwhelming desire for Jim, deep in pon farr, Spock seals himself inside his cabin.: "'He blinked, and realized he was elbow-deep in the wall, having apparently just torn open the same access-panel he had earlier welded shut. It looked as if he hadn’t even tried to solve the puzzle, just forced the panel open. This– no! I must not! But the thought had no effect on his busily-working hands. As he watched helplessly, his hands carefully reached for and activated the manual override. That easily he was out of his quarters, walking rapidly toward the turbo, his mind filled with images of Jim, the sound of his voice, his scent...'") (44)
  • The Rescue, Part 1 by Debbie Cummins (This story has a WARNING – email for details. When a race called the Dimari attacks the Enterprise over a border violation, Kirk and Spock and their landing party are captured as political prisoners, pawns in an interstellar game. And while the politicians wrangle and diplomats play their games and opportunistic officials seek advantage, the Federation prisoners are brutalized in a prison which seems inescapable: (“'He’s my second-in-command.” Kirk could barely get the words out. ”One of Starfleet’s top scientists and son of the Vulcan ambassador to the Federation. He’s worth far more to you alive than dead.” A few hurried words, a call upstairs, and then Qaris was there, rubbing his hands together. “Well, well,” he said, eyeing Spock’s body from top to bottom. “We have two important hostages, do we? Very good. The Dimari will be pleased.” Qaris leaned closer. “You’re not lying to me, are you, Kirk? Telling me a tale to save your man here?” He wasn't lying and he knew the warden could see the truth of it in his eyes, the mixture of anxiety, sorrow and self-recrimination reflected there."') (53)
  • Umbras by Mary Kay (The Enterprise is sent on an emergency mission to Disseminate Beta, an important communications hub for the Federation. Staff have been deserting the planet, and those left behind are filled with an unexplained sense of foreboding. Kirk’s and Spock’s first steps toward a new relationship are suddenly threatened by the entities and their plans to deal with invaders.: "Fear for Spock was locked alongside anger at the entities, as Kirk stood there trying to think beyond the red haze clouding his mind. He needed to get to the Vulcan immediately; at this point he wasn’t even certain if Spock was alive or not. But he also needed to deal with the shadows before they did something to him. Cautiously, the captain put one foot in front of the other, slowly making his way across the room towards Spock. With hands out, palms up, he asked in a slow, low, nonthreatening voice, “'Why are you here? Why are you hurting us? What do you want?”' When Kirk was five feet from the Vulcan he received his answer by way of mental speech. We want you dead. You do not belong here. This place is our home.") (nominated for 2013 FanQ) (115)

[comment on art: "I Will Be Careful, Jim" by T’Racionn]: Oh, so nice! Spock is mounted above his captain and preparing to enter …uh… the gates of paradise, shall we say. There is such love and concern on his face, but it’s Kirk’s reaction that draws the eye. He’s smiling. He knows his lover won’t hurt him. He wants this. He needs this. Sigh. Lovely work, T’Racionn. Thank you for sharing your immense talent with us.[2]

Stories:

  • Always and Never Apart by Blackbird Song (Stung by Kirk's rejection, an alien ruler uses technology to divide Kirk and Spock forever - yet they refuse to live apart: "The Sehlat bends his great body to touch Kirk's face ever so gently with his nose. McCoy almost turns away from the intimacy of it, but then the Sehlat's body starts to change. It is quiet where McCoy had expected noise. Just a slow change that begins with the shape of the eyes and the size of the ears, and then the limbs and torso begin to shrink and the fur and fangs start to retract. It feels slow, yet it is over in less than a minute and Spock is there, naked, lying with Kirk, who is clothed. "Jim," Spock whispers. It is guttural, broken, and it makes McCoy want to weep.") (1)
  • Contextual Architecture by Dovya Blacque (Kirk asks Spock’s help in how to respond to a love letter from someone in his past: "Spock lowered his gaze, a strange sense of having let his captain down bending his mouth into a hesitant frown. “Which is why you should perhaps be having this conversation with Dr. McCoy.” “What makes you think I don't require someone with reason? You're more help than you'll ever know, Spock. I need someone to point out the flaws in my thought process.” “I do not find 'fault',” Spock said. “I am suggesting that reason is not what you require at this time but, perhaps, you require someone with more well-honed emotional skills than I possess.” “Because we're discussing a love letter?” Kirk asked. “Yes,” Spock said as though it was quite obvious. “I am ill-equipped to advise you on matters of an emotional type...”") (9)
  • Rescue, Part 2 by Debbie Cummins (Kirk and McCoy have succeeded in rescuing Spock from Rutan Prison, but he’s in a dangerously weakened condition. Their way of escaping the planet is blocked. Forced into hiding, desperately seeking a way out, they’re unaware of the political situation swirling around them, and how decisions made light years away will affect their final fates.: "Impossibly, Kirk's expression grew even harder. “It’s the only way, Bones, ” he said, glaring with undisguised hatred at the unconscious Marosh. “You can't.” McCoy eased away and approached, lowering his voice so that Spock wouldn't hear. “He’ll never forgive himself if you commit murder for him.” “It isn't really his decision, now is it?” Kirk shot back. “There's another way.” Kirk tensed, knew what he was about to say. “No.” “Let him try. I'll be keeping a close watch. At least let him try.” “He’s too weak. He needs his strength, what little he has left. Christ, look at him.” McCoy didn't need to look. Spock was dangerously weak, the vast reserve of Vulcan strength that had kept him alive until now nearly depleted. But he understood how Spock would react to such a thing. He'd die himself before he'd be responsible for putting such an onus on the captain’s soul.") (25)
  • Before You Slip Into Unconsciousness, A Sonnet Cycle, by T'Lara (Larissa Bernstein) (110) (nominated for 2013 FanQ)
  • The Heart of a Vulcan by Khiori (115)
  • Cage of Freedom by Deanna Gray (The aftermath of pon farr leaves them inadvertently bonded, and the consequences of their decision to go on as if nothing had changed between them will affect them for the rest of their lives.: "Kirk now stared down at his hands. “I do love you, Spock, very much. As my friend. To be honest, I’ve never thought about you like that. You’re a Vulcan and my first officer, a member of my crew, and frankly, I’ve never been sexually attracted to men. I like women.”“Yes, I know.” His hands were clenched tightly together and his chest was filling with a pain he had never known before. It felt physical but its cause was purely emotional. “I’m also not very good at relationships. The few I’ve had didn’t work out. I’m not looking for a personal commitment right now; I already have one, to the ship.” “There is no need to explain. I am grateful to you for saving my life. I do not expect anything else.” Their eyes finally met again and sharp sorrow filled him. Kirk looked so sad. That he was the cause of such pain for this man...it was too much. “What do we do now?” “Nothing.” “Nothing?” “We go on as before.” “That’s not possible.” “Of course it is."") (120)

Issue 34

T'hy'la 34 was published in 2013.

cover of issue #34
  • What You Wish For by Amanda Warrington ("Kidnapped by telepathic aliens who demand he give them his “story” Kirk is then apparently returned to the Enterprise. But Spock seems very different..." -- Excerpt: "Throughout the ‘debrief’, Spock continued to hold him by his arms, which was totally out of character. Kirk believed he had a fool-proof way to test whether this was his Spock or not by doing something that was equally out of character, something he'd thought about doing far more times than he'd ever admit to anyone. If he got a bad reaction, he could always blame it on the after-effects of his abduction. Leaning forward, he lifted his head with a smile and pressed his lips to Spock’s. His first officer pulled back suddenly as though Kirk’s lips were a brand that had burned him. For a moment he regarded his captain with wide, surprised eyes, eyebrows in his hairline, and then suddenly the hot hands holding Kirk slid around his back and he was pulled into a tight embrace as hot lips descended on his."
  • All That I Have by Khiori ("After the events of “Amok Time”, Spock becomes obsessed with a need to be in Kirk’s presence at all times." -- Excerpt: "Less than 32 hours later, Spock was on Altair 6, more specifically he was in the main ballroom of the imperial palace, surrounded by various delegates, politicians, and senior officers of the three starships in attendance. He stood quietly off to one side, occasionally exchanging a polite greeting with the various attendees. Yet the majority of the time his gaze remained focused on Kirk, who was standing a few meters away speaking with the new president. Although Spock wanted nothing more than to close the distance between them, he remained where he was. After all, he could not cling to his captain like Kavarian tiger-bat while in the midst of a diplomatic function. Nor at any other time, for that matter. Yet the overwhelming need to stay close, to touch, had not diminished since his return from Vulcan and he was finding it…difficult to remain separated from his captain, no matter how small the distance."
  • Ex Machina by T’Lara ("Spock’s journey through his meld with V’ger." -- Excerpt: "Pulled apart. Yes, he is torn into pieces, scattered, a shadowy dream-appearance of his self, mangled by a meld so powerful that it has most certainly “fried his brains” as Dr McCoy would undoubtedly enjoy calling the neurological trauma. But then his pieces are so fascinatingly calm, floating around, pushing and pulling each other like magnets. His dream-self chuckles and there is not a hint of guilt or self-deprecation. Dr McCoy. The Enterprise. Kirk... ...Jim! He must get a grip and use whatever is left of his mental abilities to regain consciousness, wake up and do his best to convey the information he has gathered about V’Ger. If he could only find the words to describe what he has discovered. It was so important... But there is no air for him to breathe, only smithereens of pictures and scenes to subsist on, one bleeding into the other."
  • Never Let You Go by Deanna Gray ("Post V’ger, Kirk tries to come to terms with his conflicted emotions over Spock’s departure for Gol – and his return." -- Excerpt: "Patience was a virtue he didn’t have in abundance, and he was at the end of what he did possess. ‘Don’t push, let him take things at his own pace’ - McCoy’s words earlier in the day still rang through his head. He understood why - the meld with V’ger, the realization that he would have to accept and deal with his emotions instead of burying them, coming to terms with seeing his captain again and having to determine where in his life their relationship was going to fit, was a lot for Spock to grapple with, while also catching up on three years of science, technology and general galactic changes.”"
  • Too Blind to See – a novella by Bersakhi ("Held prisoner in the dark, with no clue as to the identity of their captors, or the reasons for their captivity, their mental bond becomes their lifeline. But what is salvation in the dark has consequences in the light." -- Excerpt: "Kirk half expected to see his ghostly image appear before him. Fingers spread wide, his hands reached out and up in a fanning motion. “Follow my voice,” instructed Kirk, rising unsteadily to his feet. He took a tentative step. Suddenly, contact. Flesh against flesh. He latched on with strong fingers, pulled Spock’s achingly familiar form to him. They clung together, hands evaluating each other’s condition. Satisfied at last, Kirk spoke. “What’s happened, Spock? What is this place?” “Unknown.” “What is the last thing you remember?” “I was… we were… I was with you, in the fields, holding….” It was probably the least articulate and informative Spock had ever been to one of Kirk’s requests. The captain in him rose and he shook Spock gently. “Think, Science Officer! I want answers!”"
  • Two Roads No More by M. E. Carter ("This novella continues the events of “Certainties of Being,” which appeared in T’hy’la 16. Kirk and Spock return to Vulcan to have their bond finalized by a Vulcan healer, however Spock’s parents respond in a most unexpected manner." -- Excerpt: "“I suppose,” he ventured finally, “that it would cause a bit of a scandal if I were to kiss you right here.” “Not a scandal, perhaps. Not in the way you mean. But given that we are in my home precinct and that the career, if no longer the face, of the son of Sarek is well known here....” Kirk grimaced, feeling suddenly conspicuous in his Starfleet uniform. “ There's no point in tempting fate.” “Exactly. However, we should soon find ourselves in... a more suitable location.” Though the home of the Vulcan ambassador to the Federation struck Kirk as a poor improvement over a public street, he covered his renewed uneasiness with a smile. “I'll hold you to that,” he said lightly. “Lead the way.”"
