Star Base Swindon was a Star Trek fan club out of the UK.

Originally a local group, our newsletters [1] have attracted members from all over the country and beyond, and we now welcome enquires from anywhere. We still have monthly meetings in Swindon for anyone close enough to get there, as well as the occasional weekend get-together for those a little farther afield. We produce four N/Ls per year... [2]

About

Star Base Swindon was formed Just over a year ago as a club for "Star Trek" fans in and around Swindon, Susan Humphries, our Secretary, starts the ball rolling and a first, rather tentative, meeting was held at my house - Sue, myself and Nick Brett, our Treasurer, being the only three present. However, the Club was on its way. Sue arranged some publicity for us in the local press and on cable TV and our first meeting was held on the 2nd September 1985 at the Link Centre. I think we were all probably a bit nervous - wondering what the others would be like - wondering, in fact, if anybody else at all would come! But, as it turned out, our worries were needless-Twenty-two people attended our first meeting and since then we have met regularly at four weekly intervals and the majority of our early members are still coming to the meetings. The hire of the room at the Link Centre includes the use of a large TV and video as well as kitchen facilities so we can make ourselves coffee during the course of the evening. Normally we try to show one TV episode and one animated cartoon during the evening plus any other interesting ideas that members may bring along, e,g, snippets from other films in which the main actors have appeared, or other bits and pieces mentioning "Star Trek" which the rest of us may have missed. At our 'last meeting though we watched an edited tape of Midcon which Sue had managed to obtain and, naturally, this held everyone's interest- We also usually hold a light-hearted quiz which our members take it in turns to compile. Although everyone has the choice of participating or not it still tends to become a bit of a free-for-all and it's quite common for the quiz master of the evening to give points for a correct answer and then exclaim "Wait a minute - you're not even in thtis quiz!" Also there's always a lot of hilarity over the off-beat answers given. But more importantly, I feel, the value of our Club is that it gives the local fans a chance to get together, talk and come to know one another. Over the last year there have been two Suecons when Sue very kindly offered us the hospitality of her home for the day and several trips to conventions for those able to go. [3]
