Spirit & Strife is a zine project focused on the character Cloud Strife from the video game franchise Final Fantasy VII.

About

The focus of the fanzine is on Cloud Strife in a positive light, whether that’s during canon events, with hope for the future, a headcanon between scenes, or in an AU. We want to celebrate Cloud and his involvement, drive, and value to the Final Fantasy VII universe and to audiences around the world.[1]

Timeline

The project was announced on August 11, 2021. Contributor applications ran from October 1, 2021 to October 31, 2021. Preorders opened on March 25, 2022 with the following pricing tiers:

  • Fenrir ($14 USD) - Digital Zine, Wallpaper, Emojis, Avatars
  • Buster Sword ($27 USD) - Physical Zine
  • Hardedge ($37 USD) - Physical Zine, Mini Prints, Sticker Sheet, Round Button
  • Fusion Sword - ($47) - Physical Zine, Mini Prints, Sticker Sheet, Round Button, Acrylic Charm, Wood Charm, Enamel Pin
  • Ultima Weapon - ($57) - Physical Zine, Mini Prints, Sticker Sheet, Round Button, Acrylic Charm, Wood Charm, Enamel Pin, Tote Bag, Acrylic Standee

Fans could purchase a digital PDF version of the zine as an add-on to physical purchases for $7. A giveaway for one Ultima Weapon bundle and a set of handmade jewelry by witchtomez was conducted from April 3, 2022 to November April 7, 2022, with the Twitter user ZayFlare4 announced as the winner[2]. A second giveaway open to those who bought physical bundles ran from April 20, 2022 to April 26, 2022 for a second set of jewelry [3]. The winner of this second giveaway was not publicly announced.

Shipping for orders began in August 2022 and leftovers were opened from August 30, 2022 to September 30, 2022.

Theft Incident

During the project's production phase, their social media account announced on July 11, 2022 that the shipping moderator’s car had been broken into last Friday, and that the box containing a set of prints and the jewelry was stolen[4]. The moderator had been in the middle of preparing for a move. While the prints were eventually found several days later — the box unfortunately thrown into a nearby bush because the thieves didn’t find them valuable — the jewelry could not be retrieved [5]. In light of these events, witchtomez donated a second set of jewelry to replace the stolen ones [6]. The project was able to ship out the orders on time.
