Vidder's Notes

LJ/Dreamwidth

This is the first vid I've made where I actually went looking for a song to fit the show - usually I just wait for the music to come to me and then jump into the vid, but I literally could not wait to vid this show and this pairing. The only problem as I started was the number of shots with talking - most often, Danny - since it's generally a no-no to have too much talking in a vid. And then I realized this is their pattern: Danny talks and Steve looks at him like his every word is fascinating; Danny gestures and argues and Steve looks at him with a goofy smile; Danny yells and Steve is bemused but besotted. So actually, the scenes with the talking are at least part of the point, which is that for Steve McGarrett, it was pretty much love at first sight.

For media fans, intense enthusiasm for a source often demands they produce a creative response nearly from the moment they first encounter it. I felt that way about the latest incarnation of Hawaii Five-O, a show that plays up the "bromance" aspect of the primary buddy cop relationship between Steve McGarrett and Danny "Danno" Williams. Within three episodes, I was determined to vid the show, an interesting challenge considering the relatively small amount of source to work with at that point.

From a narrative standpoint, the vid is a takeoff on the traditional romantic comedy trope of the "cute meet", where the boy and girl in the film or television show are first introduced to one another. In the case of Danny and Steve, the macho posturing of their first interactions is juxtaposed against the bubble-gum pop of Herman's Hermits both to create a humourous contrast and to comment on the equally clichéd tropes of male-male interaction in films and television. From a character standpoint, the vid is told from Steve's point of view, and alongside the irony and humour, there's clearly also a growing respect and affection for Danny. Steve's own father was a successful policeman but a largely unsuccessful father, and Danny's ability to balance both responsibilities seems to appeal to Steve from the beginning.

Thanks to miasnape for beta and encouragement.[1]

Fan Comments

This was lovely. They are such a cute couple, although I wouldn't mind an episode where, say, Danny gets injured or in danger or something like that for some nice h/c or at least angst. Maybe I need to look for some fanfic. (Also, note to self, must find a Hawaii-Five-O icon.)[2]

OMG!!! This is brilliant!!! I love the show and I love the song but I'm pretty sure I would've never thought of them together if I hadn't seen this vid. Good one![3]

You've migrated to this fandom! YAY!! I love your stuff from SGA and now I love your stuff for Hawaii Five-O!!! *does a dance of happiness*

I agree 100% of your description up there about their relationship and the talking.

I am so in love with this show and this vid that it's absolutely a little bit ridiculous. Meep!! And the song! It was so good! And it felt so Hawaiin (in that guitar, mellow type of way) Can't wait to see more of your stuff in the fandom![4]

Oh! This was utterly lovely!! And you're so right about the balance between Danny talking and Steve just looking at him with a besotted gaze.

They are ridiculously adorable; I'm so glad the first three eps have turned out so brilliantly :D.

And thank you for making a sweet schmoopy vid -- the boys deserve it!! [5]

Ha ha ha ha ha ha! I'm glad you gave into the madness, and the talking actually does work well in the vid! As you say, their relationship is Danny talking and Steve making some sort of (bemused, adoring, frustrated) expression in response.[6]

OMG this vid is AMAZING!!! Such a wonderful, gorgeous job it almost made me cry :D The timing of the scenes was perfect and the music made me laugh. *Epic G* I would love to see Steve & Danno's reaction to running across something like this in a fic sometime. Once again, gorgeous!![7]

Here via thisissirius' H50 Primer (recced by hermette) and while I'm headdesking at feeling the siren call of yet another fandom (I'm still in honeymoon phase with both Inception and Merlin), H50 feels like it might fill the SGA-Team-shaped hole in my heart. I had issues with the SGA writers, particularly in the last season, but maybe these writers have more of a respect for the characters and relationships they establish? This was such an engaging vid I think I'll take the plunge and watch. Thanks :)[8]

The song is perfect. I am so giddy with slashy glee that with only three eps there are SO MANY clips of Steve being goofy in love with Danny. *smishes show* The vid is awesome - you did a really nice job and yes, there is so much of Danny talking and Steve watching him with a goofy besotted look. *happy sigh* Boys![9]

This fills me with squee and glee! I did not realize just how much Steve watches Danny with that expression when he is talking, which is a lot. The song is perfect really...I always associate it with The Naked Gun falling in love montage and oddly, there is something quirky and goofy enough about Steve and Danny that it fits.[10]

So much wonderfulness!

I saw the video I think way back when you first posted it, but I was in a haze of "OMG! H50 actors! Fic! Vids! Must embrace my new fandom!" So, I either didn't notice or kinda ignored the fact you were letting us download and keep this video.

So, thank you for that. And I have in fact, downloaded an intend to annoy everyone I know with my playing this video so I can watch the Danny/Steve moments over and over again.[11]

Recs and Reviews

And if you're curious, I've been updating the post with all the Hawaii Five-0 fic I've found. In addition, lamardeuse 's vid simply must be pimped. If you never thought Herman's Hermits could speak to your soul, you're about to be proven dead wrong.[12]

[...] if you want the Be All and End All of H50 fanvids, then watch lamardeuse 's Something Good and Something's Got To Give. Girl knows exactly what she's doing and she does it good.I've been watching all of her stuff on repeat for the past two days but can you blame me? It's like she climbed inside of my head, picked out my favorite fandoms and what I've been craving and then gave them back to me, all shinny and new. @_@ Love it, love it, love it![13]

Why we love it: The song "I'm Into Something Good" by Herman’s Hermits is such a surprisingly perfect choice. The tone is upbeat and happy which makes us smile. It not only captures the fact that Steve and Danny have fallen into something good but it encompasses our feelings about Hawaii Five-0 in general. We've all fallen into something good.[14]

Something Good by lamardeuse. Steve/Danny. Made me do this: :D :D :D :D :D :D :D for the whole song, I kid you not. (Song: Something Good by Herman's Hermits)[15]
