Commentary About the Production

When I decided to put together a QL fiction zine primarily from the talent of QL readers. I did not anticipate the problems I would have with increased lack of time, malfunctioning typewriters, and so on. My wife even stepped in, volunteering to help type, but her spare time suddenly disappeared as well about the time the typewriters began permanently giving out. Finally, on January 1, I shoved everything else aside (which is why so little mail has been answered), and started scanning everything that had been typed into the computer, and started the line-by-line correcting. And then I scanned most of the remaining manuscripts and corrected them. And then type in the unscanable stories. Give me one more uninterrupted day. and I will cobble together the completed master to hand over to my printer, at long last. It'll only be about three and a half years late, and not quite as I envisioned it, but by sometime in June I should have the finished zine in hand. Thank you all for your patience.

The sad thing is that the age of fanzines is just about over. Once a breeding ground for budding talent (from which many professionals have sprung over the years, Star Trek, or QL), whether science fiction, readership has been dropping off (just like newsletters) because of the internet. With wider accessibility and appeal, there is little need for a crafted hardcopy of a collection of stories and art. Anyone can post a story (or art), and get feedback from hundreds of viewers. Of course, that means any unedited or poor story can get posted, too, and the biggest complaint has been the lower standard of quality as compared to fanzines, but given time, that level should rise. And the volume of material in the years of come will probably completely eclipse those thousands of fanzines to date.

But when the power goes off... are you going to read your computer screen by flashlight? Hmmm? [1]
