Serendine Dikumenowlz du Parthevia (セレンディーネ・ディクメンオウルズ・ドゥ・パルテビア, Serendīne Dikumen'ouruzu du Parutebia) is a very divisive character from Magi, and a frequent target of character bashing.

Canon

Fandom

The Magi fandom is divided on Serendine. She has her fans, as well as haters, both groups usually also being fans of Sinbad. Serendine haters typically also hate the Sinseren ship—or hate Serendine precisely because of the ship. Serendine's existence in the fandom revolves around Sinbad for the most part, being compared to him, although some fans have also pointed out how she's similar to Hakuryuu Ren (another divisive character) in her role as well as dynamic with Judar:

Both Zepar and Belial’s dungeons raised by Judal, both are trials of soul and mind. And both Hakuryuu and Serendine are nobles who have some especial responsibility on their shoulders.

The only difference is that Serendine rise and shine during the dungeon capture, while Hakuryuu become fallen king vessel (still shining tbh). Even though, they have absolutely no hesitation to sacrifice everything in order to protect their own countries, even if it means to become a monster or to fall into depravity.

The character herself doesn't have much fanwork made of her. There is some fanart on Tumblr and Pixiv, as well as a small number of fanfiction on Archive of Our Own, Fanfiction.net, and Wattpad. Fans often attach spider imagery to her as she is canonically known as the Venomous Spider Princess.

Her character design has gained some criticism due to having boob armor and panties only.

Comments

Some people in the fandom have pointed out a double standard in that people love Sinbad and other characters for the exact same reasons that they hate Serendine for, which could also be a sexist bias:[2]

sinbad fans (tm): i guess people just cant handle a complex, grey morality character

serendine: hi im a

sinbad fans: i hate her

I think Serendine is someone who, after finding herself alone and unable to move on, decided to use any sort of means to achieve her goals, and even if the context differs from character to character, she’s neither the first, not the only character in magi that has that mindset, it is a recurrent theme throughout the series, and even if we don’t like to accept it, it’s something that happens every day in the real world. Many characters in Magi have done something that thought may benefit them, but as a consecuence hurted other people at the same time. I love Sinbad and he’s my absolute favorite Magi character but he himself has done it ( and i’m not hating on him or anything, -i love him- i can see why he would act that way), I think he made it clear in night 173 that he understands this way of thinking too, and the fact that him an Serendine have this way of thinking doesn’t mean they are heartless, it means that they are willing to make sacrifices to achieve something they believe is for the better, though i get that this is something that might not me complatible with our sense of what is etically or morally correct.

The haters' main gripe with her seems to be all the things that happened between her and Sinbad, especially the bad ones. Usually the dislike of Serendine is somehow tied to her dynamic with Sinbad.

[...] Now to be fair I don’t dislike her just because she gets shipped with Sinbad (who is my husbu btw), in fact I don’t think ships should matter in the way we perceive a character. Rather I don’t feel like she’s that close to Sinbad, and here I’m simply talking about it in a non romantic way. [...] If she’s supposed to be the Kassim of SnB then I don’t feel Sinbad cares about her, the way Alibaba cared about Kassim. [...] Even if I compare her to the 8 generals, someone like Mystoras feels like he’s really close to Sinbad, but not her. Because of that it kinda feels forced how ultimately Sinbad is supposed to care about her. [...] I just don’t like her character. Granted she still grew as a person, but my main gripe with her right now is that she’s still thinking about herself, now even more so than before. She comes off as rather selfish, or just self-centered.

Also I don’t see why she still continues to hang around Sinbad, they obviously have different goals. She wants to get her country back, while he made it clear that he wants to create his own country, and he went as far as accept Barbarossa’s offer. Maybe she will indeed end up splitting from the group, if the scenario I talked about were to happen, but even before this I never saw her as someone who shared the same goal/dream as Sinbad. She’s not out there to change the world, she thinks it’s naive and only believes in having the right bloodline aka she believes in the old way.

So those are my main gripes with her [...]

Shipping

The most popular Serendine ship is Sinseren; a ship as controversial as Serendine herself. Overall it's an uncommon ship in the fandom, however. It doesn't really have a following in the Japanese-speaking fandom, but some fanworks have been made for it in the English-speaking one.

Another Serendine ship on people's radar is Serendine/Drakon. It got overshadowed by Sinseren, especially since it was already known that Drakon's canon crush on Serendine was not going to last.

When it comes to gen, Serendine is often paired with Judar. She could be holding a big sister style dynamic with the much younger child Judar.

Events

A Serendine fanweek was held in October 2016 on Tumblr.[5]
