The Stargate Atlantis Gen Ficathon is a gen fanfiction challenge run once a year in the SGA fandom.

It was founded in 2008 by Sholio as a reaction to the fact that most SGA challenges were pairing-focused.[1] She moderated the ficathon until 2011.[2] In 2012 the ficathon was continued by michelel72 with minor changes, e.g. fanworks are posted to the AO3. The number of participants and fanworks created for the challenge has declined each year.

Rules

Unlike many fanfic challenges, the SGA Gen Ficathon doesn't assign participants another participant's request. Instead prompts can be submitted before the ficathon. Each writer is assigned one prompt from the list (since 2011, writer can choose a prompt from a partial list if they wish, and since 2012 they can ask for more than one prompt) and a genre that they choose when signing up. Seven genre categories exist: Friendship, Angst, Team, Humor, Action/Adventure, AU and Supporting Character Appreciation Day. Posting is usually spread over two weeks, and each day of the week one to three stories of the respective genre are posted anonymously. Like many other gen communities, the question of how "gen" is defined was discussed, most recently when a fanwork included explicit sexual content.[3]

Fanworks

Overall, stories written for the SGA Gen Ficathon focus less exclusively on Rodney McKay and John Sheppard and on familiar fandom tropes than the majority of SGA fandom. The diverse genre categories and the extra category for supporting character appreciation[4] contribute to this.

Since 2011 the ficathon also included fanart and many stories received accompanying artwork.

In 2012 a random bug on the AO3 led to the fanworks receiving improbably high hit counts.
