SG1 was an email discussion group focused on the Stargate and Stargate SG1 franchise.

It was created on August 14, 1998. It was a public group, with no membership approval process. It was active until early 2013.

As of October 2019, the group had 1097 members.

Description

SG1 is devoted to discussion of all things relating to Stargate -- be it the Devlin/ Emmerich movie, the hit series "Stargate SG-1", the spinoff series "Atlantis" as well as "Infinity" the cartoon, books, the actors and actresses other projects, Egyptology, mythology, the workings of the Stargate, spoilers, whatever. SG1 provides fans with an open forum to discuss all aspects of the Stargate worlds, so your participation is encouraged! Fan Fiction is not allowed on STARGATE. We do have a sister list, SGFIC, devoted to Stargate Fan Fiction.
New members are moderated so don't bother sending SPAM to this group, it won't be approved, and you will be banned. We have a zero tolerance policy.[1]

History

January 1999 was the month with the highest number of posts at 1839 messages.

Welcome Letter

This is the complete welcome letter that new members of SG1 received upon joining.[2]

Welcome to the Stargate Discussion List!

This Welcome Letter is really only a 'stopgap' until you can get time to read the List's webpage, known as the Ultimate Newbie Post (UNP) which is located at: http://www.geocities.com/jadeeyes.geo/UNP/UNP.htm

Until you do so, please take the time to read this letter before you post to SG1, it's designed to provide you with just enough information so that you won't stick your foot in 'it'.:)

Oh, and if you read nothing else at the UNP please read the Helpful Hints section as it outlines other general do's and don'ts concerning list etiquette. The rest of the UNP explains a lot of what we do, why we are like this and the oddities running around. And, just so we don't confuse the hell out of you, within 48 hours of subscribing, a Greeter should contact you so that you can ask questions in a private forum without feeling embarassed.

Having told you that.....how about I introduce myself? :)

G'day, I'm Karen (Kazz) Barrett, Listmum (Troika) for the SG1 mailing list. What does the Troika stand for? It represents the fact that I share the Listmum duties with two others. Christina Wilson and Jade.

If you need to get in contact with List Admin contact me or the other Mum's, you can find our email address' at the end of this message.

Please allow up to 72 hours for a reply from me as I sometimes have a life outside of Stargate, but I'll try to respond to questions, complaints, comments as quickly as possible. No answer means your mail was probably eaten by the Gate, so please try again.

LIST INFO

SG1 is devoted to discussion of all things relating to Stargate -- be it the Devlin/Emmerich movie, Scifi's hit series "Stargate SG-1", books, the actors and actresses careers, Egyptology, mythology, the workings of the Stargate, spoilers, whatever. The List provides fans with an open forum to discuss all aspects of the Stargate worlds, so your participation is encouraged!

Fan Fiction is not allowed on SG1. We do have a sister list, SGFIC, devoted to posting Stargate Fan Fiction. To subscribe, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sgfic

SGFIC also has a twin called SGWrite. It's primary function is that of writer's forum. Here you can exchange ideas about fanfic writing, ask for beta readers, bounce ideas off of each other, provide feedback, work through writer's block, and any other discussions related to SG Fan Fiction. To subscribe go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sgwrite

There is also another list, Gateway, devoted to the slashy aspects of Stargate. To subscribe, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gateway and send an age statement to [email protected]

There are a number of other lists in our SG1 family. These are described in detail in the UNP.

All lists are available in both Normal mail (receiving individual messages) and Digest formats. The digest is sent every 25 messages and around midnight on any day that has mail. A no-mail option is also available for those of you going on vacation and not wishing to get listmail for a while. To go to Digest (or back to single e-mails or to NoMail) go to http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups and follow the instructions there. All subscriber changes and information available is there. Failing this, email me and I'll do it for you.

If you do not wish to belong to SG1, you may unsubscribe by sending an email to: [email protected]

If you have any difficulties please contact me NOT the List.

RULES AND REGS

DISCLAIMER I have absolutely no control over private e-mail. If someone sends you rude and/or obnoxious messages in private e-mail, those messages should remain strictly between you and that individual, even if it is about a topic that was discussed on SG1. I suggest you delete these types of emails and place the individual in the ignore 'basket' - trying to rationalise with these individuals generally only encourages them.

COMMON COURTESY Please think twice before you post. Do NOT indulge in name calling or flaming (deriding or belittling or insulting someone else's opinions or beliefs or honest questions). Will what you post hurt somebody? Make someone angry? Give away a spoiler about an upcoming episode without a warning? If so, don't post it! (See Spoiler Space) Ask yourself if someone posted the same type of response to you would you get hurt or angry? If so, don't post it! Be nice and polite. As a result, you'll have fun. Guaranteed!

OFF TOPIC Off Topic [OT] discussions are welcome, allowed and encouraged - all I ask is that they are clearly labeled with an OT or Off Topic. This is out of respect to those readers who just wish to read about strictly SG-1 related issues and yet provides fun and even silliness [:p] to those who also enjoy getting to know the other members of the Sandbox better. *g*

SPOILER SPACE There are 26 countries represented on this list and because of this there are widespread differences in airing schedule of Stargate SG1. To give you an idea of just how widespread: Fox (US syndication) is between a season and a season and a half behind [[[TV Channels|Scifi]]; Canada seems to average half a season behind; Australia's Channel 7 is sporadic at best but is upwards of a half season [plus] behind; and the UK's Sky channel is between half a season behind and half a season ahead of Scifi. The other 22 countries have their schedules and on top of this, there are new members who have only just been introduced to Stargate SG1. Needless to say it can be chaotic. So.....it's because of this that we've developed the following, trying to make things as fair as possible without getting ridiculous. Please note: These rules take into account the fact that several mail programs only allow a certain number of characters in the Subject line, truncating the rest. 1. There are no 'filler' lines, otherwise known as Spoiler Space. 2. In the Subject line please type the word SPOILERS plus the episode you will be discussing. For example, if you plan on discussing Small Victories you'll need to type 'SPOILERS Small Victories' in the Subject Line.

NOTE: Please make sure you don't introduce a secondary topic - that way people won't miss out on other threads of discussion. By this I'm referring to OT comments, and/or a complete switch of subjects that become discussions in themselves but are missed by others because they still wear a SPOILER tag. The onus is on people to keep an eye on Subject lines and to keep them current as to the content.

This warning system is to be used for the current season and the previous one. As of July, 2004 that means Season 7 and 8. (Since Atlantis starts in July as well, that means Season 1.) The latest season takes priority so if the Subject line lists a season 4 episode you haven't seen yet then you need to accept that earlier episodes may be referred to within the post.

For those of you that care about being spoiled, please remember that everyone makes mistakes and the only sure way to avoid being spoiled for an episode is to not read any listmail until you have seen the episode.

NO ATTACHED FILES OR BINARIES ARE ALLOWED!

They can carry viruses, fill up mailboxes quickly and are unreadable by some mail programs. Added to that, digest form does not save them and several major servers don't accept them. If you do send an attachment Egroups will automatically remove it from the email and only the text of the message will be sent to the list. Messages containing attachments but no text at all will be returned to the sender with a no-attachments notification.

If you have something that you'd like to share, please direct subscribers to either a web site, or to contact you off list. Alternatively, Egroups offers a "shared files" section where list members can place photos, articles etc. so that others can read them. There is up to 5 megabytes of disk space and all files can be uploaded via your browser. To take advantage of this option go to www.egroups.com, log in, click on sg1, select "files", add the file and then tell the ML that you've posted the file there, giving a brief description as what it is.

NO CHAIN LETTERS OR VIRUS WARNINGS ARE ALLOWED! I don't care if it's a chain letter saying that if the ML passes it to 35 friends, while standing on our collective heads and patting our stomach's, we'll get to spend a weekend each with Michael Shanks. And as much as I'd like it to happen, I don't care if it's a virus warning telling me that my computer will turn into James Spader on December 31, 2000. NO CHAIN LETTERS OR VIRUS WARNINGS!!!

ADVERTISEMENTS ALL ads listing items for SALE, TRADE, etc., no matter how minor, MUST be cleared through the listmum FIRST.

LIST CULTURE Please do not post complaints to SG1 about the list culture or a lack of posts about Stargate. If you want to talk about Stargate, then START your own thread. Ask a question. Make an observation about a character, an episode, a hypothesis.

FORWARDING You can forward posts and information from elsewhere on the Internet and Usenet as long as it is Stargate related.

ADMIN POSTS If you see a post marked ADMIN, read it IMMEDIATELY. If you don't read anything else on SG1, read the ADMIN posts. Then save them, and treasure them always. Posts labeled with ADMIN are about list administration, and that label should only be used by the LISTMUM. (This restriction does not apply to replies to those posts.)

SIGNATURES Please "sign" your posts -- either with your name and/or e-mail address OR a full signature block. We all like to know whom we're talking to, and it helps to have an address if someone wants to reply privately as some mailers don't show the "From:" header when they display an e-mail message. Having said that however, please limit your signatures to 8 lines in total - including blank lines.

It may seem like there's a lot to swallow here. But what "rules" SG1 has are here because we -- along with many others -- want SG1 to be a top quality discussion list. We were the first Stargate mailing list (that I know of) to run on a major mailing list server and as such, I'd like SG1 to be a place where subscribers look forward to getting e-mail, to share in their common interest (or obsession, depending how you look at it), and to make lifelong friends.

Welcome aboard! And enjoy your journeys into the Stargate!

Karen, Christina & Jade
