Rantaro Amami is a student from Dangan Ronpa. He was a prominent character within the series and popular with fans. Amami debuted in Dangan Ronpa V3: Killing Harmony, though did not survive The Mastermind's Killing Game. He was considered to be Dangan Ronpa's third "mystery talent" student, after Kyoko Kirigiri and Hajime Hinata.

Canon Overview

Pre-Game Personality

Amami was an average teenage boy and a fan of Dangan Ronpa, the in-game fictional reality TV show. He auditioned for the show's 52nd season, (stylized as V2 by fans,) and got on it. In fanworks, this is considered to be his Pre-Game Personality. Like with every other Killing Harmony student, all of this info is filtered by Tsumugi Shirogane, and fans may not believe this part of his character is true.

Dangan Ronpa Personality

Amami knows nothing about himself at the start of Killing Harmony. This bothers him very little; he's even hopeful he'll eventually remember, and he's curious about what talent he has. His calm mannerisms and style of speaking seems to hint that he knows more about the Killing Game than anyone else, painting a large target on his back from the start. Adding to this, he greatly resembles the incredibly prominent character Nagito Komaeda from Dangan Ronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, leading fans to speculate that he would be similarly important.

During Chapter 1, he is murdered by Tsumugi Shirogane. Kaede Akamatsu is framed for it, leading to her execution by Monokuma.

Amami's talent is uncovered during the latter part of Killing Harmony. In Japanese, he is a Super High School Level Adventurer. In English, he is the Ultimate Adventurer. After winning the previous Killing Game, dubbed V2 by fans, his memory was erased entirely and he was forced to participate in V3.

In Japanese, he often adds "~ssu" to the end of his words. His dislike of automobiles may be slang for disliking "criminal acts" as a whole[1].

Amami's birthday is October 3rd. This is Climbing Day in Japan, something which may be referenced in fanworks. On Twitter and Pixiv, art tagged with #天海蘭太郎生誕祭[year value] are commonly released on his birthday. More birthday tag listings can be found on Dangan Ronpa Birthday and Anniversary Tag List.

Popular Tropes & Fanon

In order of how common they are:

All of the above are wrangled tags on Archive of Our Own. Other places where fandom lives may portray Amami with one or all of these attributes.

Japanese fans have also given Amami several nicknames, such as Cabbage Taro, Ten-san, Amamo Rantaro, (referencing a misprint in the official Dangan Ronpa artbook,) and Omuraissu, (a menu item from the Sweets Paradise Dangan Ronpa collaboration, pun on Omurice.) Ten-san comes from an interpretation of the first Kanji in his name (天.) It's usually pronounced ten, though Amami's name has it pronounced as ama.

Amami also popular for self-shipping works.

Subjects of Fannish Interest & Meta

Amami's Piercings

The amount of piercings he has on his left ear is inconsistent in official material made for Killing Harmony. Fans often choose to draw him with the most amount of piercings he's shown to have, rather than underestimating them.

Relationships

Less Popular Relationships

This is purposefully an incomplete list, as Amami is shipped with much of Dangan Ronpa's cast. In Kanji, Amami is usually represented in a pairing names with 天 (ama). For Katakana, it's usually [x] ([x]). In Hiragana, あま (ama) and てん (ten) are common.

The order seen should be what's most popular unless marked with "possibly." ENG portmanteaus are also subject to change. Relationships listed fall into GL, NL, BL, Poly, Combi or Cargo.
