Play was a bubblegum pop/teenipop girl group active from 2000-2005 and revived from 2009-2011. In fandom, they are most notable for their single "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," a duet featuring Chris Trousdale of Dream Street, and for their single "Us Against the World," which was featured with a fanvid in Lizzie McGuire's special episode in which Miranda Sanchez has an eating disorder. Play were a staple of the teenipop (early 2000s bubblegum pop) movement.

In Fandom

The biggest and longest-running fansite and fan gallery for Play was Play Mania, run by Lisa. While it began as a fansite in 2001, it eventually became Play's official website when they regrouped in 2009, still run by BNF Lisa.

The vast majority of fanworks for Play were on Geocities and Angelfire fansites and have since been lost. Kirsty's Teenipop Zine website and Bubblegum Magazine both featured Play heavily and have also since been lost.

Play, along with other teenipop groups, were hugely popular to RP on Xanga and LiveJournal through the mid-2000s. Most of these journalling networks have been deleted, but one that does still have some content available for viewing as of January 2021 is LJp0serz, a long-running RP of teenipop stars.[1]

Pairings

  • Faye Hamlin/Rosie Munter was the most popular Play femslash pairing due to the long best friend relationship between the girls.
  • Play/Dream Street were also very commonly paired together due to the collaboration of Chris Trousdale with Play, and the largely shared fanbase of the groups.

Use in Fanvids

Due to many of their songs having themes of female friendship and "girl power," Play is used for female-centric fanvids on occasion. Two examples include Ladies of SHIELD//Us Against the World by Hannah (Vidder) and Multi-Friendships by rosewoodcollabs.
