Before becoming the 12th Doctor, Capaldi had previously played Lobus Caecilius in the 2008 episode "The Fires of Pompeii" with the Tenth Doctor and his companion Donna Noble, as well as playing civil servant John Frobisher in the 2009 spin-off Torchwood: Children of Earth.

Fannish Opinions

The announcement that Peter Capaldi would play the 12th Doctor was announced live on the BBC to much fanfare and fannish excitement.[3]

When his regeneration was announced, fans were disappointed to discover Capaldi's portrayal of the Doctor was coming to an end.[4]

He's sometimes cited as one of the best actors to have portrayed the Doctor, though opinions obviously vary considerably among fans.
