Norman is a gen mostly Star Trek anthology with eleven issues.

The Zine's Title

From the seventh issue: "Our club, the USS Thagard, is named for Dr. Norman Thagard, the first astronaut to wear a Star Trek pin into space. This fanzine, Norman, is also named after Dr. Thagard and for one of the androids in the classic Star Trek episode “I, Mudd”."

Regarding the Trek Original Universe: Pioneer

From issue #7:

Star Trek: Pioneer was a concept created by DramaTrek, a group of Thagard members who wanted to explore the universe of Star Trek with characters of their own creation. Captain Maddox and Shern of Andor were first developed by Matt Black. Pioneer is a project that owes its creation to several members of our fictional starship; I was just lucky enough to get the first chance to interpret it.

From the zine:

Now here's a few words of what you'll find in this issue. We are first and foremost a Star Trek fanzine, but there are submissions covering a wide variety of topics (including my personal favorite, Doctor Who).

There are stories featuring diverse encounters — come face to face with: Borgs and Barneys, Vampires and the Goddess Venus, Cybermen and Daleks, Joan of Arc and Blade Runners. We have our first Battlestar Galactica story (see Norman 5 for a very good poem), and FBI agents Scully and Mulder have a sinister journey into a very Star Trekky kind of adventure. Variety in fandom is something we celebrate here. Norman 7 literally covers the gambit from Apollo to Xena.

From the editorial by Matt Black:

Welcome to Norman 7! This is the lucky number seven for the crew of the USS Thagard. Each year, members of our Star Trek/Science Fiction fan club work diligently for months writing poems, stories and essays, drawing and drafting artwork, and finally editing, re-editing, laying-out, and printing this fanzine.

The USS Thagard is one of several Star Trek/Science Fiction fan clubs in the Philadelphia area, and we are also a chapter of STARFLEET. Actually, we're the “Flagship” chapter of the 6,000+ member International Star Trek Fan Association because one of our club members is the Commander, STARFLEET!!! But, we don't let this go to our heads — much.

Our chapter is rapidly approaching 100 members, making us the biggest chapter in Philadelphia, and among the largest in the Fleet. We are an extremely active group, holding an event on almost every day of every weekend of every month of every year! These range from typical fan club activities such as video parties, movie outings and convention trips -- to more social activities such as bowling, skating, miniature golf and trips to the shore... to name just a few.

However, we're not just a social club — we're also a social service club. Our members participate in fund-raising walks for Multiple Sclerosis and Diabetes, entertain children in area hospitals, as well as raise money and do volunteer work for major charities. Currently, our major charity is Project H.O.M.E. which provides Housing, Employment Opportunities, Medical Care and Education to the homeless in the Philadelphia area.

Our club, the USS Thagard, is named for Dr. Norman Thagard, the first astronaut to wear a Star Trek pin into space. This fanzine, Norman, is also named after Dr. Thagard and for one of the androids in the classic Star Trek episode “I, Mudd”. Although Star Trek is the major emphasis of our club, in this fanzine you'll find stories ranging from Battlestar Galactica to the X-Files with many interesting stops in between! Enjoy!
