Misato Katsuragi
Misato Katsuragi is a major character in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Canon
Misato is a commanding officer at Nerv, a paramilitary organization devoted to fielding mecha called Evangelions in combat to defend Earth against alien monsters known as Angels.
When the series' 14 year old protagonist Shinji Ikari is summoned by his estranged father to pilot an Eva, Misato agrees to become his guardian as well as his commanding officer.
Fandom
Misato is a popular character, particularly in the West; Japanese Eva fandom tends to focus more on the younger characters.[1] Fans who watched the series during their teens near the time of its original release often find they come to relate to Misato more in adulthood.

Misato has a single canon love interest, Ryoji Kaji, who has been her on and off boyfriend since college. Their relationship is complicated, and as Kaji is a triple agent seeking the truth about the Eva program, they don't entirely trust one another. Kaji is assassinated before the end of the main series. While Misakaji appears regularly in fanworks, it's often as a background pairing.
Misato does her best to be a supportive parental figure in Shinji's life, but their canon relationship is also sexually charged; she often behaves flirtatiously toward him, and near the end of the series she kisses him passionately in a desperate attempt to motivate him for a final battle. Shipping Misato/Shinji (Misashin) is surprisingly popular despite their large age gap and despite Shinji's status as a minor during canon, although the popularity of the pairing has waned significantly over time. During the late 90's and early 2000's, however, Misato was a fairly common third option among fans who preferred opting out of the Ship War between fans of Asuka Langley Sohryu and Rei Ayanami, Shinji's primary female love interests.
Misato's other closest relationship in canon is with her co-worker Ritsuko Akagi, the head of Nerv's science division, who has been her friend since college. Ritsuko is aware of a great deal of classified information about the Eva program that Misato has no idea about, and as a result of the secrets between them, they grow apart over the course of the series. Their canon relationship is platonic, but as F/F has grown more popular over time, Misaritsu has been slowly but steadily growing in popularity.
