Mako Rutledge also known as Roadhog is a playable character from Overwatch, a first-person shooter game by Blizzard Entertainment.
Canon
Roadhog is originally from New Zealand, but was in Australia when the omium core exploded.[1] The explosion permanently displaced him and many other outback residents. This led to him joining the Australian Liberation front.[2] Eventually he was hired by Jamison Fawkes - also known as Junkrat - to be his bodyguard. Now he travels around the world with him.
Fandom
Tropes within fanworks include:
- Crossovers, allusions and references to other fandoms with large characters, for example Totoro and Wario.
- Drawing Roadhog owning a Pig (a reference to the pig symbolism his character is based on)[3]
- Roadhog frequently appears alongside Junkrat
- Roadhog and Junkrat being compared to other trouble-making duos (especially Wario and Waluigi)
Fanworks involving Mako tend to be full of canon-type violence. Some focus on the affect the radiation had on his mental state, while others explore his relationship with Jamison Fawkes, platonically and/or romantically. Some fanworks also take a gentler perspective on his personality, exploring whether the character has a softer side. Due to the small amount of canon lore in Overwatch there is a lot of room for headcanons that deviate from superficial appearances.
Shipping
The juggernaut ship is Roadhog/Junkrat. This is because the two are a duo in-game and share extensive history. They are featured together in in-game sprays, comics, and other backstory material. Examples are:
- There is a small sticker on Roadhog's hook that says 'from Junkrat' when wearing his Christmas skin.[4]
- Both characters have a dancing emote, and if lined up correctly they appear to high-five each other.
- Roadhog and Junkrat have several matching sprays that make a full image when placed next to or on top of each other.[5]
Het ships are uncommon. Roadhog has very few in-canon interactions with other characters except Junkrat, which has led to him being almost exclusively shipped with Jamison.
