The Jedi AU is a common trope used in Star Wars works, wherein a character who is not a member of the Jedi Order is placed in the role of a Jedi. This is sometimes a subgenre of role reversal fics in Star Wars; with Sith or other dark force users recast as Jedi. In other cases, the character(s) who are cast as Jedi or padawan(s), may not be force sensitive in the original canon. In this way the Jedi AU can overlap with force-sensitive character AUs.

The Jedi AU also overlaps with the Jedi Academy AU; a fic setting which places characters in a Jedi Academy, usually but not always Luke Skywalker's school on Yavin IV. In a Jedi Academy AU, dark force users and non-force sensitive canon characters can be remimagined as padawans of the Jedi Order. These works can also be pre-canon and canon-divergent stories, rather than full blown AUs. In these cases the force may have been used to alter the memories of students, thus explaining why they don't remember their classmates or their time at the Academy in the current canon.

A variation of the Jedi AU is the Sith AU. In this case, characters who are Jedi, light force users or non force-sensitives in canon, are recast as Sith. In many works where only one character is reimagined as a Jedi or a Sith, the work is often tagged as Jedi!Character or Sith!Character, and the AU tag may not be used.

Another variation is the No Jedi AU. These fanworks resemble mundane AUs set in the Star Wars universe.

A Jedi AU may also refer to a fic from a different fandom, wherein characters are put into the Star Wars universe and made Jedi, similar to a Hogwarts AU.

Common Storylines

  • Ben Solo is often reimagined as a member of the Jedi Order. In these fics, Ben does not leave Luke's Academy, or if he does leave the Academy he doesn't seek out Snoke and the First Order. As a Jedi, Ben is often an important figure in the New Republic and may be a Senator.
  • Darth Maul is often made into a Jedi. Sometimes, Maul was never a Sith and is raised in the Jedi Order. Other times, Maul rejects his training and his Master and chooses to become a Jedi.
  • Cody (CC-2224) or other clone troopers are also often included in Jedi AUs, or at least made Force-sensitive.
