Rules

Rules & FAQ 2020 THE BASICS (Who are you and why have you appropriated 2014’s most popular hit song?)

Hello! Hightown Funk is a fanwork exchange focused on the pairing of Hawke/Varric from the BioWare series Dragon Age. We welcome to Hawkes of all genders.

By signing up for this exchange, you’re agreeing to produce one original work of art or fiction based around another participant’s prompt. In exchange, you will receive one work of art or fiction based around your prompt. Sweet, right?

THE DIRTY DETAILS (How does this work?)

Sign-ups for Hightown Funk 2018 will open on September 18, 2020 and close on October 2, 2020. The sign-up form is on AO3 and requires you to fill out information both about what you’d like to receive (your “requests”) and what you’re like to create (your “offers”). You must have an AO3 account to participate in this exchange. If you don’t have an AO3 account, you can easily request an invite.

Assignments will be sent out between Oct 2 and Oct 5. The minimum requirements for a gift are 1,000 words for fanfiction or one refined sketch for fanart. Don’t feel confined to those limits, however! Also, all works must be original – this means you can’t write a new chapter of a WIP to give your recipient.

Exchange etiquette requires that you make your best effort to satisfy one of your recipient’s prompts. If you are unable to write your recipient’s custom Hawke, you may write about a default or nonspecific Hawke. Your story should be primarily about Hawke/Varric, although you’re welcome to include any additional pairings or characters your recipient requests.

Please keep in mind any squicks or triggers your recipient lists; make sure they’re comfortable with explicit material before writing or drawing an NC-17 rated gift.

Do not bash any characters. Remember that even though you might dislike a character, your recipient might love them! Character bashing is discourteous to your recipient and violates the spirit of the exchange.

If you have any additional questions for your recipient, you may drop them an anonymous ask (make sure you don’t reveal yourself!) or contact a mod to act as a relay.

Some not-so-fun rules that we want to make clear include the following:

  • No character bashing. This includes both within prompts and fills. We understand not every character is going to be popular – but your prompter or filler might like them! If you are a prompter, feel free to politely request leaving X or Y out of the fic (this is what Dear Author letters are for!). If you’re a gifter and you don’t feel comfortable writing a character, feel free to pick another of the given prompts, or avoid writing them. If you feel the prompt’s nature requesting a certain character makes it difficult to complete for you, please let us know and we can work something out.
  • That’s it. Seriously, previous exchanges have been so rad for two years going that we haven’t had to even think up any other rules. Let’s keep that going!
