Heart of the Minstrel is a het Beauty and the Beast anthology.

Issue 1

Heart of the Minstrel 1 was published in 1990 and is digest sized with 76 pages. Artists are Wendy Smith, Joyce Lee Turner, John Jordan, Kerin, and Barbara Gipson. Authors are Shannon O'Connor, Wayne Kelley, and Beth Druhan.

Collection of a variety of stories set in both 1st and 2nd season as well as 3rd and post-3rd season. One story, "2:38AM"is a poignant (and painful) account of Catherine's imprisonment by Gabriel, as seen through her eyes. In "Sleep, My Love," the author proffers one of the more medically plausible explanations for Catherine's survival of the morphine injection. Diana appears as a friend in this zine.[1]

  • The Beggar Prince (4)
  • Silent Voices (5)
  • Laughing Gas (33)
  • Dreamer's Loveson (40)
  • Goodnight Wish (41)
  • Not A Great Star by BeeDrew (42)
  • Perspectives (51)
  • Refuge (52)
  • 2:38AM by BeeDrew (reprinted in Earth, Wind, and Fire) (53)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1

Short stories, all-season, well written. The standout story is Druhan's “2:38AM” in which Catherine, as Gabriel's prisoner, reflects on what her relationship with Vincent has meant to them both. You want this.[2]

Blended Classic and S#3 B&B in an 'arc'-style presentation. This zine would be excellent in any case, but considering it's a first-ever effort, it is simply astounding. The time-line begins with Classic, then segues perfectly into S#3 events. Beth Druhan's "2:38 a.m." is the finest insight study of Catherine I have ever read; Shannon O'Connor's "Fury" absolutely sets the standard and the touchstone for Diana Bennett's personality. The art in this digest-size zine is competent, though not rock-you-backwards ... the writing, however, does just exactly that![3]

Issue 2

cover of issue #2, Winter Owlstone

Second volume in the series contains 6 stories set in all seasons , including one SND. Diana is featured prominently - as a caring friend - in "High Flight." "Surfacing is a sequel to "Sleep, My Love" found in the first volume. Nice art.[4]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 2

Anthology of short stories, all-season (Diana is still a friend), and some SND Classic. Standout story here is O'Connor's “High Flight,” in which experienced pilot Diana flies Vincent to the shore to shout out his anguish at the sea. Good writing throughout. You want this one too.[5]

Issue 3

Heart of the Minstrel 3 contains a single story called "High Flight" by Shannon O'Connor.
