HPotter was the mailing list for the fansite The Wonderful World of Harry Potter. It was founded in August 1999 on ONElist, making it one of the earliest Harry Potter lists. ONElist subsequently merged with eGroups then Yahoo! Groups, where the list is still online.

The list was originally created for Kate to provide Wonderful World of Harry Potter announcements and other Harry Potter news, but also invited general discussion about Harry Potter. The group's description stated:

Are you interested in the popular Harry Potter book series, written by J.K. Rowling? Then this is the mailing list for you!![1]

Approximately two weeks after the group's creation, there were 10 members on the list.[2] By June 2001, there were 229 members on the list.[1]

Before the posting to the list was restricted to moderators in July 2001, there were a total of 213 messages posted.

Some Topics Discussed

  • The publication of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in the U.S. (September 8, 1999) and reactions to it
  • The publication of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (July 8, 2000)
  • Rumours and speculation about future books
  • J.K. Rowling interviews
  • Warner Bros.'s threats of legal action against fansites
  • Advertisements for other Harry Potter fansites
  • Information about the upcoming Philosopher's Stone film

Change to Announcements-Only Group

In July 2001, Kate announced that the group would become an announcements-only list, and that the group settings were changed so that only moderators could post to the list. She directed members to the WWOHP Cinescape message board for general Harry Potter discussion.[3] The group description was changed to:

Receive updates about the Wonderful World of Harry Potter, my website, and other HP news.

Despite this, there were no further announcements posted to the group since the change.
