Epoch: An Historical Old Guard Fan Zine is a fanzine in The Old Guard fandom, that contains art and fiction focused on members of The Old Guard in historical settings.

Development

An interest form for this fanzine circulated on Tumblr starting on September 15th, with a close date of September 30th 2020. The organizer, ashleyrguillory, requested information related to possible contributors of writing and art, as well as logistics around the zine such as price point.

The Zine opened for artist and writer applications in October with a close date of October 31, 2020 noted in the application form. While the pieces were being developed, the official Tumblr account shared related posts from the zine contributors. On February 1st, 2021, a Kickstarter launched to support the printing of the zine, with the creator indicating that any funds raised above the amount required for printing and shipping would be donated to charity. Each Monday in February after the Kickstarter Launch, the Zine shared preview images and fic snippets as teasers.

From the Kickstarter description:

Epoch: An Historical Fanzine is a collection of transformative works featuring our favorite immortals and their adventures throughout time. The zine is a project made by and for fans of The Old Guard, the 2020 Netflix film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka, based on Mr. Rucka’s comic book series by the same name. The zine is a tribute to a story that connected fans during a time of isolation.

Within this 92-page zine, you will find full-color paintings and illustrated stories created for this project. More than 20 artists and writers banded together to imagine the team’s lives through the centuries.

The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund a physical copy of the book along with reward materials to create a physical marker of the hard work and dedication of the fans. This book is exclusively for sale through this Kickstarter and will not be made available again.[1]

The Zine was fully funded within 5 days of the Kickstarter launch[2]. Those who pledged at the highest tier ($35 or more) would receive a sticker sheet and 2 prints along with physical and digital copies of the zine, but only a $12 pledge was needed to receive a digital copy.
