Taking a little break...

7/11/2000 My dearest readers, As some of you may have noticed by the lack of updates on my stories, I am taking a little break from the fan fiction world to write my own original novel. I really want to have something of my own that I don't have to put a disclaimer in front of! :-) I truly love these stories, though, and promise I will come back and finish them when time permits. But for the next month or two, I'm afraid that updates will be rather sporatic. Thanks to all of you who continue to read and write to me...your words mean more to me than I can express. I hope that one day you will be reading my original novel along with the fan fiction that has been such a big part of my life for the past year. Best to you all,

Jen

The Episode Stories by: Jenny Dare

This summarizes the events in the first two installments of my "Episode" series. I hope you will take a moment to read through this, as it will give you a much better insight to the happenings of Dawn Of A Legend. I've also linked the events to the parts they correspond to, so in case something looks particularly interesting to you, you can jump straight to that part of the story and read it in its entirety. note: some of the links to Episode .5 may contain graphic content; be it violence or sexual. Please be aware of this as you read. I will say, however, this story is non-slash.

Episode .5

About a month before The Phantom Menace

Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Master, Qui-Gon Jinn are on a secret mission on the planet Anchoron. Unbeknownst to them, Obi-Wan is being pursued by a sinister foe, Darth Maul, who has been tracking the Jedi's moves with the intent to strike him down when the perfect opportunity presents itself. In his relentless pursuit for revenge against the Jedi, Darth Maul is led on two separate occasions, not to Obi-Wan, but to Jaya LaLuna, a young woman strongly connected to Obi-Wan's life. Compelled by the possibility that she may be useful as a tool in his quest to eliminate the Jedi, the Sith Lord accosts her twice, leaving her as the sole survivor in her group of colleagues which are in negotiation to bring a war-torn planet into the Republic. Attempting to pick information from her mind as to Obi-Wan's whereabouts, Darth Maul threatens her with dire consequences if she doesn't come up with an acceptable barter for her life--and Obi-Wan's.

Unfortunately, all the bartering in the world would never end the Sith's merciless crusade to kill Obi-Wan; so Jaya, unnerved by the sudden attacks and the murder of her colleagues at Darth Maul's hand, sends Obi-Wan a message. She has decided to take leave from her position as Ambassador's assistant and interpreter, and is returning home to grieve for her mentor's recent death and garner peace of mind. In her message she also warns him that Darth Maul's strange, seductive techniques wore down her reserves, and that he now knows exactly where Obi-Wan is at.

Unable to bear the idea of Jaya's turmoil, and feeling that a confrontation with this anonymous stalker is inevitable, Obi-Wan leaves his mission with Qui-Gon and travels to Ketaris to rendezvous with his love. When Darth Maul arrives on Anchoron and finds Obi-Wan has left, he is seething with rage, but also has a dawning of what he needs to do to finally slay his enemy, whom Darth Sidious has had a vision as being a lethal threat to the Sith in the future. With new resolve, Darth Maul travels to Ketaris, where he is positive through his instinct alone, he will find the young Jedi. Obi-Wan's reunion with Jaya proves to be bittersweet, because as she explains to him the details of her encounters with Darth Maul, and battles with her own confusing fascination with her attacker, the Jedi realizes that the threat of this stealthy enemy may be greater than he had originally imagined, and his foreshadowing dreams of the past months seem to be materializing.

As fate twists and turns in unwitting ways, Darth Maul arrives on Ketaris sooner than Obi-Wan would have expected, and he feels a dark presence following him as he makes a quick trip away from Jaya to the central hanger, where his contracted fighter ship is docked. He cannot see the Sith Lord, but he can feel him and a shadow disappears from the rafters and escapes in a stolen T16 Skyhopper; a much faster craft than Obi-Wan's borrowed landspeeder. The young Jedi has a horrible vision of the scene that can potentially unravel if the Sith Lord gets back to Jaya's house before him; and thus, the final conflict begins.

(note from author: If you like action, I highly recommend that you read the last few of parts of Episode .5 as I made sure they were packed with tons of energetic scenes, while still managing to keep Obi-Wan from actually seeing Darth Maul close enough to recognize him. This story is pretty much "canon" in the way it was written, so Maul's annoymity was really important to me. But if you like land battles, space battles and innovative ways of using a lightsaber in combat…start at Part 9 and read from there…you won't be disappointed!)

Obi-Wan arrives back at Jaya's lakeside house to see, in the distance, a shadowy figure carrying the unconscious body of his love onto a very menacing looking ship. He runs to attack the craft, but as much as he tries, he is not able to do enough damage to keep it grounded. His heart sinks as it lifts away, but a new threat is only beginning; the ship banks around and opens fire on Obi-Wan from the air.

Attempting to use the tall trees of the surrounding forest to his advantage, Obi-Wan tries everything he can think of to ground the enemy's ship. Just when he is out of ideas, the Planetary Enforcements arrive on the scene, firing on Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator, and ensuing a raging space battle above. Then Obi-Wan remembers a great secret of Jaya's from her past days as a smuggler; and he goes to a hidden hanger in the forest to unlock the old freighter that has been housed there, unused for some three years.

Unfortunately, the two adversaries reach somewhat of a stalemate; Darth Maul efficiently eliminates the first round of Planetary Enforcements, but both remaining ships (Obi-Wan's and Maul's) are badly damaged. In the distance, another fleet of Planetary fighters can be seen bearing down. The Sith Lord decides enough is enough, and although he didn't defeat the Jedi this time around, at least he has a valuable commodity in his cargo bay to use as bait.

Defeated and momentarily incarcerated, Obi-Wan is forced to abandon the battle, and he stares helplessly as the Sith Infiltrator disappears into hyperspace, taking Jaya along with it. After explaining the situation to the Planetary Enforcements, he is released but the ship is confiscated and Obi-Wan returns to Jaya's house, to see the violence from the attack that he wasn't there to stop. She is alive, however, of that much he is certain. Just as he is beginning to formulate a new plan to somehow track his Dark enemy, a message comes in from Qui-Gon, telling him that he must return right away. A message has come in from Chancellor Velorum, and the Jedi are needed immediately for a top secret mission. As reluctant as he is to do it, Obi-Wan realizes his duty as a Jedi must come first. He takes an evening to center himself, to tap strongly into his life bond with Jaya, and leaves for Coruscant, clinging to the faith that once this new mission is completed, he will do everything in his power to track her down and bring her home.

Episode .75 Exile

Exile is a segue piece. The timeline is one week before The Phantom Menace. Obi-Wan is on his way to Coruscant, and eventually to Naboo. In the meantime, Darth Sidious is making final arrangements with the Trade Federation, a small step in his rise to power.

Exile takes place on the planet Korriban, where Darth Maul keeps Jaya in his hidden mountainside lair. Located on the other side of the planet from the burial tombs of the ancient Sith, his dwelling is mysteriously and imperviously protected from the powerful spirits of the ancient Sith Lords. Using Jaya for not much more than a pawn, he allows her to send one transmission, expecting that it will be to her Jedi love; it is not. To make things all the more unusual, a strange young man with a link to Jaya's past as a smuggler has begun delivering daily food and water to her chamber.

Meanwhile, a spy receives a message through the holonet, encrypted in a way that only he and one other person would know how to unscramble. Feeding it through a special slot in his reader, Skyler (the spy) sees the image of Jaya LaLuna, begging that he gets this transmission to Obi-Wan. She doesn’t know where he is exactly, but everything in her mind says to seek him out on Naboo. Skyler drops his current contract and makes haste to the blockaded planet, but must bide his time before he attempts to get the message to Obi-Wan, as the planet has now erupted into war.

At this time, Darth Maul gets a transmission from Darth Sidious, telling him to come immediately to Coruscant; their plan is now fully in effect, and the time to reveal themselves to the Jedi has arrived. Darth Maul takes one night to burn entries from his journal, erasing all parts of his life he deems insignificant while Jaya watches, feeling somehow connected to the beautiful, handwritten words that even she, with her strong language skills, cannot discern.

Exile ends one week later, with Jaya waking from the violence of a horrible dream; a dream that has no images, only a panic-stricken sense of rage and disbelief. As she searches her mind for images to match the horror in her heart, she finds none, but does realize there is a terrible quaking in her link with Obi-Wan. She knows that he is alive, but that something has happened that makes his soul wrench to the point of causing a tremor in their life bond. Something has gone terribly, horribly, unthinkably wrong.

And thus…starts Dawn Of A Legend
