Enlightened: A Gojo Satoru Fanzine is a nonprofit zine dedicated to Gojo Satoru, a character from Jujutsu Kaisen.

About

Enlightened: A Gojo Satoru Zine is a SFW, non-profit, Jujutsu Kaisen project highlighting the strongest jujutsu sorcerer in Tokyo, Gojo Satoru! Our aim is to explore Gojo’s character and chronicle his life from his childhood, life as a student, and at present as a mentor at Jujutsu Tech.[1]

The project was announced on January 14, 2021, promising an interest check in the future[2]. Interest check opened on February 14, 2021 and would close March 13, 2021[3]. The project reported a tally of over 230 responses[4].

The original title of the zine was Shojo Gojo, but the mod team decided that the project needed a new name, opening a form for suggestions from followers on March 15, 2021[5]. The new title that would be used in the final copy of the zine, Enlightened: A Gojo Satoru Fanzine, was announced on April 7, 2021[6].

An additional side zine was announced to be in the works on March 20, 2021. Aptly name Not Safe For Gojo or "NSFG" for short, the side zine was described as "an anti-Gojo digital companion book where contributors will get the chance to poke fun at Gojo and bully him, as he deserves"[7]. The side zine would contain memes, parodies, and "all forms of clownery".

Contributor applications ran from March 21 to April 17, 2021[8]. After a report of 300 submitted applications, emails would be sent by April 23, 2021[9].

Preorders began on August 20, 2021 with the following pricing tiers[10]:

  • Not Safe For Gojo ($5 USD) - Digital Companion Book

  • Infinite Void ($50 USD) - Physical Zine, Digital Zine, Not Safe For Gojo, Stickers, Sticker Sheet, Print, Polaroids, Acrylic Charm, Notepad
  • Limitless ($60 USD) - Physical Zine, Digital Zine, Not Safe For Gojo, Stickers, Sticker Sheet, Print, Polaroids, Acrylic Charm, Notepad, Polaroid Charm, Stamp Washi Tape

An early bird bonus was offered to the first 75 physical orders, where buyers could receive a Gojo Satoru-themed daki charm[11]. Stretch goals includes a candy charm at 75 orders, a sleep mask at 150 orders, and a silver foil upgrade to the zine cover at 200 orders[12].

A share campaign was organized starting August 21, 2021, encouraging followers to retweet and share the preorder post in exchange for a photocard by nicahls to all physical orders[13]. A giveaway ran from September 8 to September 18, 2022 for one full bundle, a daki charm, and all stretch goal items. The winner was announced to be Twitter user Andrea_Leduck the next day[14]. Preorders closed on September 20, 2022.

Book only and paper merch bundles began to be shipped out on February 2, 2022[15]. Half and full bundles began shipping on March 7, 2022[16].

Leftover sales ran from May 2 to June 5, 2022. As a bonus, the sale offered a complimentary print of the zine cover as well as a photocard to the first 30 physical orders[17]. After leftover sales closed, the project's team gave their thanks and announced that $5000 USD was raised and donated to the Fred Hollows Foundation[18].

Plagiarism Incident

On September 27, 2021 in the middle of the project's production phase, the mod team came out with a report that they were notified that one of the prints displayed in their listings looked similar to another piece published in June 2020[19]. They concluded that the print was plagiarized and removed the artist responsible from the project as well as the merchandise they designed.

To make up for this, a print of the cover art would be offered instead, and the polaroid prints would be replaced with prints of artwork by guest contributors from inside the zine book.
