Don't Touch the 3rd Rail! or "Vidding Suggestions for serious vids" is a guide to stylistic vidding choices that arose from conversations between fan vidders on the Vidder (mailing list) in the late 1990s.
Among the techniques it warns to use sparingly (or avoid if possible)
- Blooper reel clips in serious vids
- Jump cuts
- Use of credits
- Songs with illegible lyrics
- Black, or fade to black, within the body of the vid
- Single cuts longer than 8 seconds
- Clips (with internal cuts) longer than 15-20 seconds.
- Unusual versions of well-known songs
- POV changes
