Dipper is a term that originated in the X-Files message boards and X-Files mailing lists in the early 2000s, during the airing of the 8th season of the original series of The X-Files.

One of the first usages of term was most probably in an discussion on alt.tv.x-files trying to coin a ship name for the pairing Skinner/Doggett in late 2000.[1]

It's used to refer to fans who ship the X-Files characters Doggett and Scully and want them to be romantically involved. There used to be a Delphi hosted Dipper message board which could be accessed via http://www.delphi.com/dipper/start/[2]

Some fans preferred the term DoggShipper.[3] Not to be confused with Dipper Pines, a character from Gravity Falls.

History

David Duchovny re-negotiated his contract at the end of the seventh X-Files season which lead to a story arc where his character Mulder was abducted and Duchovny only appeared only in 8 out of 21 episodes. To fill the void, showrunner Chris Carter introduced a new male character and partner for Scully: John Doggett. Scully is vary of her new partner at first who is tasked to help her finding the missing Mulder. Over the run of the season the trust and working relationship and friendship between the two partners grows which sparked the shipping of the Dogget/Scully pairing and the coining of the term to differentiate themselves from the Mulder/Scully shippers..
