Death and Martha is a TikTok webseries by flickerspark_ – who plays all the characters – about those who oversee the running of the universe and, specifically, how humans pass into the afterlife. Martha, a human soul, and Death are joined by a cast of various characters as they manage the workload of bringing deceased souls onto the next stage of their existence (with options!).
With just over 140 episodes as of April 2024, the series is popular, and many newer episodes exceed 1 millions views. As the series has grown, the fanbase for the series has developed out of the TikTok comments section and into other fan spaces such as Twitter and Archive of Our Own, though the majority of fan interaction remains on TikTok.
Canon
Human soul, Martha, makes sure that the entire process of moving onto the afterlife (as well as various other aspects of the existence of the entire known universe) runs as efficiently as possible, despite the best efforts of the cast of characters around her. Death, her co-worker and companion, is tasked with cases of undead souls to retrieve and wrangle into wherever in the afterlife it is they should be going.
Alongside the two core characters are various gods, after-life beings, and souls – both dead and, occasionally, living – who get involved somewhere along the way.
Primarily a comedy series, many episodes also add commentary on real-world events and issues, typically from the perspective of what that all means for a recently (or not so recently) departed soul.
Death and Martha has had a canonical crossover with TikTok webseries Hells Belles, where the actions of Bel and Sharkie in Hells Belles caused catastrophic events for the universe which had to be fixed by Martha.
Fandom
The comments sections of the Death and Martha videos are active, which is where the fandom for the series initially grew. As the series progressed, fans began to jokingly then more seriously ship Death with Martha, which led to flickerspark_ adding more of those scenes to episodes.
As of April 2024, there are 10 fanworks for Death and Martha on Archive of Our Own. All of the works are crossover works, with Hells Belles being the most common crossover.
