Black Moon Rising is a published novel widely theorized to be based on Reylo fanfiction.

Theorizing/Reactions by Fans

Read this one for the character name. Wish it was better, glad it wasn't worse. Jass (I'm-totally-not-a-certain-sith-lord) and Reza (personality-stripped-to-be-his-mate) are not the most exciting leads. The (see-I-detach-from-my-moon-sized-base-I'm-legally-distinct-from-the-DeathStar) Nexus is not as impressive as I'm sure it's supposed to be. The sudden stop is not an ending.

Malaraa[1]

I read this to satisfy my Reylo withdrawal and it did not disappoint. Jass and Reza are on opposite sides of an intergalactic conflict, but that doesn't stop them from finding each other across the universe. Alternating between each of their point of views, we see firsthand the struggle their bond creates as they come fact-to-face for the first time in 7 years. My little black heart loved this story. I was so upset that it ends in a cliffhanger and can't wait for the next book!

Elle Backenstoe[2]

I start reading the description and some things start to seem a little familiar. [...] It's the story of a girl who comes from a nowhere sand planet but possesses mysterious magical powers. She is connected by some kind of magical energy to a black-haired warrior working for a sinister political power.

Jenny Nicholson[3]

Removed from the exact context they were obviously written in, the characters’ motivations make no sense anymore. The author did this to herself. It’s obvious that when she wrote the fanfic, it was deeply entrenched in the universe in which it was set, which is a good quality for a fanfic! But it also means that you can’t extract it without breaking it.

Nicholson[3]

A lot of fanfics turned published fiction aren't far enough removed or reworked with original world-building for me. That said, the author did describe some truly, page-turning-ly beautiful angst and longing between the hero and heroine. I would read a fully original romance by the author based on her ability to describe and connect me to the character's emotions. Her skill at that kept me reading. The world building was almost enough to pass for original space opera or sci-fi, except the secondary original plot dragged and eventually lead to a "gotcha" cliff-hanger ending, that closely mirrors the choice the hero makes in the movie this fandom work is based upon. I read this with Kindle Unlimited, but if I had bought a copy, I think I would have felt cheated out of my money because that's an awful ending with no sequel in sight. Archetypes and space dramas are certainly not copyright, but I would encourage this writer with romance talent to focus on stronger secondary plots in the future.

Vonze[4]

Black Moon Rising by Frankie Rose is so obviously a published Reylo fanfic. There’s almost no world building and the plot drops you in the middle with the assumption that you sort of already know what’s going on.[5]
