Amapolas para las Luciérnagas ("Poppies for the Fireflies" in English) is a multiauthor collaboration SYOT fanfic in the The Hunger Games fandom. It is written in Spanish and twenty nine authors participated in it.

The project started in 2016 as a new activity for the THG ffnet forum "El Diente de León". The course of the story was decided by the five (later three) moderators and each author was in charge of writting the assigned POV for the original tribute they submitted to the story.

Through the course of the project, several mini games and activities were announced on the official thread that allowed participants to earn food or items for their characters once they were in the Arena. Mini games were not mandatory but they could help tributes survive, if won. The project was marked by a very competitive attitude among participants, which caused friction to arise from the beginning to the end.

Publication

As the forum was created on October 28th, it was decided that it would take place during the 28th edition of the Hunger Games. The SYOT was announced on March 16, 2016 on the forum and a number of authors also got contacted via PM. Participants got asked to mention it to friends that might be interested in order to fill in the rest of the remaining tribute slots.

By March 25 all tribute slots were filled and the first mini game announced for the following day. The first task consisted on choosing the name for the story. All twenty four participants were asked to send their proposed title via email. From all the entries, the five organizers would choose three. Then a poll in the forum ffnet profile would open where people could vote their preferred title. The prize for the winner would be a backpack containing two liters of water, three energy bars, a blanket, a candle, matches, five aspirins, bandages and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. The title had to be in Spanish and have a maximum of five words, it had to be related to the SYOT theme and not be cliché. Among all the participants who submitted an entry, a knife with a four-inch blade was also raffled. The chosen titles were three: "Amapolas para las Luciérnagas" (Poppies for the Fireflies) enviado por Chupipli, "La única alternativa: Sobrevivir" (The only alternative: survive) by Bermone and "Cuando la luz se apaga" (When the light goes out) by Yolotsin. Chupipli's explanation for the title was the following:

Poppies are children, since, like this flower, when they are uprooted from their home and thrown into the Arena, they wither and die in a matter of days. The fireflies symbolize death and the ghost maintained by the Capitol, who is the only beneficiary in this; that is why in this case the insects are not benevolent but cruel and dull.

Chupipli

The second task was launched on April 2. Participants had to work in pairs of district partners (ie the submitters of both District 5 tributes). The task consisted in creating their respective district escorts using a form with the following fields: Name, Age, Appearance, Zone of Residence within the Capitol, Personality. The prize would be a shared backpack with four liters of water, two jerky packs, a can of beans, a can of corn syrup and two small clubs. The moderators would choose the winner between all entries.

Controversies

Sockpuppetry suspicions

The delivery of tribute forms was carried out through the personal emails of each submitter. When receiving one of the tribute forms, the girl from District 9, slot belonging to Nathalie Longbottom, was delivered through JeannineMatheus' mail that had the boy from District 1. When this incident was reported to JeannineMatheus, she explained that Nathalie and she were cousins, and that she had sent the form from home, while she was logged into her email. Even with this explanation, the sockpuppetry rumors never stopped due to various factors, one being that neither of the two agreed to join the chat group created to coordinate, another being that both took a long time to write their assigned part and to leave reviews. Both tributes were allowed to remain in the story, as long as their submitters met the deadlines, but it affected the opinion of the rest of the participants regarding Sky (the boy from District 1) and Riley (the girl from District 9) as well as their creators.
