Canon
Murray Bauman was introduced in season two as a recurring character before being promoted to the main cast in season four onwards. He's a former investigative journalist hired to uncover the mystery of Barbara Holland's death, coming to the conclusion that there was a "full scale Russian invasion" although Jim Hopper dismissed those conclusions. Nancy Wheeler visited him with Jonathan Byers where he poked fun at the two's relationship and the "will-they-won't-they" status leading to his reputation in the fandom as a matchmaker.
Then in 1985 Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper discovered a Soviet base at a farm, capturing the scientist Alexei. Since neither of them spoke Russian they brought him to Murray to translate for them. Because of Alexei the Americans learned that they had assembled a machine in a secret base beneath Starcourt Mall which could open a new gate to the Upside Down. The team visited a funfair to search for Joyce and Hopper's kids where Murray stayed with Alexei, winning him a Woody Woodpecker stuffed toy. Alexei was then found by Grigori when Murray went off to get some funfair snacks for him to try, and was killed by him.
