“Justice disapproves of my obsession with you”

Ok, but the new information with Karl gives us more context for this. Because yeah, I do think there’s an element of Justice wanting to protect Anders from suffering if/when he loses Hawke given how things have gone for him in the past, and I think Justice has some understandable fears about the amount of exposure to intense human emotion he’s having to deal with. But also…

Anders didn’t try to run away when he was with Karl. Not once. For years.

I think that’d scare the shit out of Justice. Anders was willing to give up his freedom because of his relationship with Karl - a relationship he still won’t admit was based on love, although it clearly was. How much more is he going to be willing to give up for Hawke, when he’s finally stopped holding back?

And this isn’t just about what that’d mean for the mages, or for Anders, this could destroy Justice. Because fighting against his purpose - his true nature - is the one thing that really could turn him into a demon. If Anders gives up on their cause then Justice - and Anders along with him - could be corrupted.

I think that’s why Justice pushes so hard on the rivalry path - it’s not enough to save either of them, but the fact is Anders will take any risk, make any sacrifice, just to get a little more time with someone he loves. On the friendship path, Hawke doesn’t want him to make that sacrifice - he knows his cause is important too, and he’s not Karl, he doesn’t have to be left behind, no one’s going to take him away because he won’t let them. That’s why Justice is able to trust him and stops objecting, stops trying to pull them apart.

I mean, I’m heartbroken by this new Karl information, it’s so tragically awful and the thought of Anders having to recover from his year in solitary without Karl is terrible. But I think it adds a new layer to his relationship with Hawke, and their relationship with Justice (however you interpret that). Hawke is what Karl would have been if he’d been willing and able to run away with Anders - if they’d been able to have it all. I’ve always said that the ending, the right ending, with Hawke and Anders as fugitives is a happy one and this proves it. This time he didn’t have to choose. This time, they escaped together.
