Science fiction zine Le Zombie published a readers' poll in its 15th issue (October 14, 1939). The survey asked about the most popular fans, fanzines, and professional SF magazines.

According to editor Bob Tucker, 90 postcards were sent out and 47 official cards were returned. 14 unofficial cards were rejected. Tucker also noted that (in his opinion) two fans had tried to disguise their handwriting and vote for themselves as most popular fan.

Issue 16 revealed that the 14 unofficial cards all belonged to members of the Los Angeles Science Fiction League. Tucker said that an official postcard from Russ Hodgkins was the only one that could be counted, and that the only change in the final rankings would have been moving Voice of the Imagi-Nation up to third place in the fan magazine ranking.[1]

A more extensive fan survey took place in 1940-1941 with Art Widner's Poll.

Results

"If U could correspond with but one fan, who would that fan be?"

Ackerman 11, Tucker 10, Wollheim 4, Wilson 3, Taurasi 3, Hart 2, Speer 2, the following received one each: Rosenblum, Reinsberg, Warner, Litz, Fischer, Campbell, Clarke, Carnell, Moskowitz, Freehafer; two cards were blank at that question. Total 47.
