William Shatner Appreciation Society Newsletter was published by the fan club William Shatner Appreciation Society .

The newsletters appear to have been published roughly every two months. Once a year, the club also published a journal.

The first journal (1973) contains a story by Shirley Maiewski.

Possible Predecessor?

As of mid-1971, a club with this same name was being run by Sue Clejan (out of California). Perhaps Clejan passed the club along to Kotar, or they could have been two unrelated clubs with the same name at different times.

The first issue has contributions by both Sues, so the two Sues were certainly in contact with each other.

From the editorial:

With the May issue is enclosed a playbill from "Remote Asylum", in which Bill appeared. This is part of the club policy to make available to members material on Bill, and we hope you like it.

The two main activities of the WSAS recently were the taking of club memberships at Equicon, and the further developments on Shatner Con, formally titled "The William Shatner Film Festival."

At Equicon, the largest STAR TREK convention ever held, the WSAS had a table, where we took many new members into the club. We were also giving out information on Shatner Con, and, from the early responses, this seems to have been quite a success. All the stars from the series were present except Leonard Nimoy, and Bill, who had a previous commitments and was in Canada.

The following week, after Bill had returned, the four club officers met with him in a three hour meeting. Pending club business was taken care of, including the ratification of the WSAS constitution. Work was also done on Shatner Con, and a hotel was selected for the convention. It is the City of Commerce Hyatt House, sixty three hundred east Telegraph Road, Los Angeles, California. Plans were made to obtain the "Challenge" and "American Sportsman" episodes Bill was in, and previously the two psalms he preformed in were obtained.

Plans are also underway to get the five episodes of "Mike Douglas that he co-hosted. A $5.00 registration is required for admittance to the festival, all proceeds to go to Muscular Dystrophy. Anyone who is interested in attending and would like to pre-register, may send the donation to Cheryl Etchison, the club's co-vice president. All the members will be kept informed on the details, and for those who are unable to attend, the WSAS will have a very detailed report, including photographs, on the con. The WSAS recently received a quantity of STAR TREK film clips, and a packet of individual frames is available to any member who would like them. To receive a packet, just send an SASE to Joan Gessler, the club treasurer.

The ENTERPRISE CONTINUES,

Sue Kotar

From the editorial:

Work on the William Shatner Film Festival is still underway, and any person wishing to pre-register may do so by sending a $5.00 donation to Cheryl Etchison [address redacted]. It will be held in the City of Commerce Hyatt House, 6300 East Telegraph Road, Los Angeles, California, the first, second, and third days of September, 1973. Mr. Shatner has told us he will be in attendance during part of the festival, and as I have stated previously, many of his television and movie credits will be shown. Guest speakers and seminars are also being arranged, as well as an auction to help raise proceeds for Muscular Dystrophy. At this time, a non-attending membership fee has not been decided upon, and any inquiries may be made to Cheryl Etchison, who should also be sending out flyers to everyone on the mailing list. [1]

From the editorial:

I have been informed that forty films have been requested for the upcoming film festival, and one guest speaker, Mr. John Newland has been asked to attend. Room rates at the City of Commerce Hyatt House are $13.00 for a single, and $16.00 for a double. There are at present no finalized plans for a banquet, and the closed art show will be managed by Merrie Gail Taylor. There will be no non-attending memberships, and in both single day and full registrations, the donation is $5.00. The festival is being conducted by Cheryl J. Etchison, who will also be in charge at the festival, and will assume all the responsibility for it. The W.S.A.S. is sponsoring the festival in name only, and the committee members are; Cheryl J. Etchison, Merrie Gail Taylor, Eleanor Gunderson, and Pamela Parker. A review of the festival will be included in the journal.

This is the first journal of the W.S.A.S., and in it, I have ·tried to present a variety of works, both fiction and non-fiction, representing William Shatner's talents and versatility. As promised, it contains a detailed biography and an update on the credit listing. Again, this does not comprise a complete record of everything Mr. Shatner has done, but it is a further attempt to keep you informed on him, both past and present.
