Fandom by Source Text: Criminal Minds

Revolving around an elite team of FBI profilers, the show began in 2005. The team analyzes the country's most twisted criminal minds, attempts to anticipate their next moves before they strike again. The Behavioral Analysis Unit's most prominent agent is David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), a founding member of the BAU, who returns to help the team solve new cases, while pursuing some unfinished business of his own. Known as something of a lone gun, he has to learn to work within the parameters of a new team setting. The team is led by Special Agent Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson), affectionately known as Hotch. A former family man who is able to gain people's trust and unlock their secrets. He copes with balancing bringing in the bad guys, overseeing his team and trying to hold on to what little he has left of his son's life, now that has wife has divorced him.

Also on the team are Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), the daughter of high-powered diplomats who recently joined the team and must prove her worth to Hotchner. From the beginning it becomes clear she despises politics as she's hounded by FBI upper management to report BAU activities and instead, throughs her cell phone away instead of playing along. Special Agent Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore), an expert on obsessional crimes has been on the team for 10 years. He's recently been pegged to lead the New York City FBI office, but doesn't have Hotchner's recommendation because he's too much of a lone wolf. It’s recently come to light while on a case in his hometown of Chicago, that as a teenager he was sexually abused by his coach and mentor.

Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler), a classically misunderstood genius whose social IQ is as low as his intellectual IQ is high. Able to remember all that he reads and able to read 20,000 words in 10 minutes, he uses his intellect to help the team but to also keep everyone at arms length. Jennifer "JJ" Jareau (A.J. Cook), a confident young agent who acts as the unit liaison for the team. She is the first contact for police departments requesting the BAU's assistance and handles the media in order to keep the rest of the team out of the limelight.

Lastly, Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), a computer wizard who helps researches the cases. Bright, bold and determined not to let the grisly things she sees each day drag her into the harsh reality of the criminal mind, she has a special flirtaous friendship with Derek. Each member brings his or her own area of expertise to the table as they pinpoint predators' motivations and identify their emotional triggers in the attempt to stop them.

Initially, Jason Gideon (Mandy Pitkin) another original founding member of the BAU was with the team, but he left due to burn out at the end of season 2. Gideon's departure was keenly felt by Reid, who had had a close mentor relationship with him.
