Okay SO

AMV = anime music video OR animated music video, I've seen it used for both but anime music video most often, usually means clips of existing animated show edited and set to music
Anime Music Video
fanvid = that but with clips from live action tv or movies
Vidding
PV = Promotional Video, I think the term originated w/the vocaloid community as illustrated/limited-animation videos set to a piece of music
animatic = not a fan term! the word originated in professional animation, it refers to a storyboard set to animation timing, often with dialogue, sound effects, and soundtrack edited in as well
fan animatics became more popular in recent years, not sure what started the boom but I've seen a lot of them for musicals like heathers and hamilton around 2016 as well as podcasts (probably bc they let you practice character design as well as other animation principles?)
pv does not stand for previs and I very very rarely see PMV as an abbreviation
but basically,
an Animatic means you'll get rough sketches that are intended to be the basis for a full fluid animation, usually telling one coherent story
an AMV means you'll get animated clips of an existing show edited together
and a PV means you'll get pretty pictures set to music with like after-effects transitions between them or otherwise limited animation
ok google is telling me ppl have been calling music videos promotional videos since before the internet was a thing but online I have mostly seen it in vocaloid and adjacent circles
AHA the person who called their tma vid a PV made a persona fan PV set to classic vocaloid song lost one's weeping. As I Was Saying
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K37IopzRei8&ab_channel=mads%21mads%21 one time I started making a kenhina PV set to a loser doesn't need an encore by yorushika but I got as far as drawing both characters and then got distracted by other things and stopped
I could get back to that........... I still think it'd work
