Underpin, also known as as Undertale: Pinball Edition, is a physical homebrew pinball machine based on the game Undertale. It was developed by Kelly Corcoran, known as Gornkleschnitzer online, with translite art created by Matti Martin. Development of Underpin began in 2017, with the game completed in 2019 and debuting at the gaming convention Midwest Gaming Classic the same year.

Upon its debut, Underpin received a positive reaction from both the pinball community online and the Undertale fandom due to the quality of the machine, Corcoran's attention to detail, and the unconventional choice of pinball as a fanwork medium.

Gameplay

The main gameplay loop of Underpin consists of activating and completing eight main objectives, each one corresponding to a specific Undertale character. Six objectives that can be accessed from the start of the game: Toriel, Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys, and Mettaton. Once the first six objectives are completed, the Asgore fight begins, followed by the Flowey fight afterwards, the latter of which serves as the game's wizard mode. Once Flowey is completed, the game's objectives reset and gameplay continues from the beginning.

Development

Development began in 2017, after Kelly Corcoran was inspired by other custom machines at Midwest Gaming Classic.

Last year, at the Midwest Gaming Classic 2017, there were a couple of custom games floating around, and I developed a massive inspiration, and within several months I had confirmed myself 100% insane.
If I were to build a pinball machine, what theme would I reference? Now granted, I do have an original theme idea that I plan on exploring after this project is done, but my soul was already filled with determination. 11 design iterations later, I finally had a playfield design I liked, laid out in Visual Pinball.

Kelly's progress with the Undertale machine, quickly nicknamed "Underpin", was serialised in a thread on Pinside over the course of 12 months and followed by numerous forum members.

Reception

Underpin has received a positive reception from both the Undertale fandom and pinball enthusiasts. In 2019, a Reddit post showing a picture of the machine at Pinball Expo 2019 received around 3,700 upvotes on /r/undertale.[3] Similarly, a Twitter post by Arcade Random Posting showing the machine at Midwest Gaming Classic 2021 received 2,100 retweets and 12,900 likes. That's just awesome.
Now whoever made this pinball machine has lots of determination.
