I Told You So is a Kirk/Spock story by Dana Austin Marsh.

It was published in the print zine T'hy'la #11.

Excerpt

"'So, you gonna tell me why you’ve been acting like a sun about to go nova?” The doctor leaned back in his chair, ready to be father, friend, confessor or ass-kicker, depending on the current need. “Spock and I can’t agree what to do on our upcoming leave.” Kirk admitted. “It’s only four days in orbit around Lamorin. Not like you have a helluva lot of choice,” the doctor reminded. Only by main force and a healthy dose of self preservative instinct did he refrain from laughing. The legendary Captain of the Enterprise had been turned into a yeoman-chewing tenor by a marital spat.'"

Reactions and Reviews

I adored this! I love camping as much as Spock, and found his reactions and grumbling both hilarious and appropriate. Sunburn, bugs, skunks and rain. What fun! What else? Topped off with the thoughtfulness that never ceases to overwhelm me, this was a very enjoyable, well-crafted mix of laughter and love. [1]

I enjoyed this humorous, established relationship story of trouble in paradise. Well-developed plot that led to a satisfying ending. I loved Kirk's stubborn assurances throughout -- why do human males always behave like that? and Spock's muttering beneath his breath. It was a heart warming moment when Spock left his message on Kirk's terminal -- that's my Vulcan! This could have been an ordinary, over-done 'camping' story, but the solution to the conflict, and the well-done humor, gave it a personality all its own. [2]

I Told You So is a fine example of Marsh’s specialty: the short, light-hearted K/S story. Here Kirk is in a foul mood because he and Spock cannot agree on how to spend four days of shore leave. Kirk wants to go camping and relive the days of his youth when he and Sam would spend time “cooking on an open fire, sleeping on the ground.” Spock, on the other hand, proclaims, “I do not like the activity.” As in so many areas, Spock gives in. That’s when the complications begin, and they really are cute even though they don’t show our stalwart captain off to best advantage. The ending scene when Spock erases certain words from his memory defines the words “K/S cute.” [3]

Delightful "Honeymooners" episode - Kirk is quarreling with Spock over what do on an upcoming leave. He wants to go camping, and gets his way, with disastrous results. Nice characterizations and resolutions. McCoy, "leaned back in his chair, ready to be father, friend, confessor, or ass-kicker, depending on the current need." Spock: "I have temporarily erased from my knowledge of all 35 languages the words 'I told you so.'" [4]
