Tin Man is a three-part mini-series that aired on the Sci Fi Channel in 2007. Described as a "re-imagining" of The Wizard of Oz, the show transforms the world of the original fantasy into a science-fiction setting with strong elements of steampunk and develops new plotlines and character backstories.

At first glance, the miniseries appears to be based primarily on the 1939 movie of The Wizard of Oz. There are a number of visual references: for example, the first appearance of the Mystic Man is a view of his giant, disembodied, green-tinted head. There are also scripted references, often as comic relief; for example, the Sorceress describes the Mystic Man as "The Great and Powerful Blah Blah Blah." However, the O.Z. (the analogue to Oz) is presented as a real place, not a dream as in the movie. Fairly late in the miniseries we learn that the heroine, DG, was named for her ancestress Dorothy Gale, who moved back to Oz and was eventually buried there; this too is in accord with the book series, not the movie. We see Dorothy Gale's ghost wearing silver (not ruby) slippers, another reference to the books. From these clues, the miniseries appears to be positioned as a sequel to the Oz books, although it can also be viewed and enjoyed as a re-envisioning of the original story.

Fanfic started appearing on FanFiction.Net before the final part aired, and five or six livejournal communities for it were started within a week after the series finished.
